New member, some questions on volt gauge, idle, and clunk in the back.

I just baught my 87 n/a a month ago. It did not run and I got it for $750. It turned out it just needed a fuel pump, and I drained and replaced the fuel with 97octane(before reading thread on 87 being O.K in it) and now it runs smooth after new wires and plugs. But it idles at about 1500 for a bit, then will sometimes go down to 1,000, but only after alot of driving. It pulls great and runs smooth, for a car that sat for 2 years.

Problem two is the voltmeter works intermitantly. And has lately decided not to work at all. I,ve done the wiggle test, but to no benifit. Any ideas?

Third, I put new mufflers on it(factory) but was wondering if after inspection, I could put those ones the Honda guys use.I like the sound of some(some are too tinny for me)but I am curious because I've been reading that this engine uses back pressure to open some other ports of some type above three grand, and dont want to mess that up.

Also, why the difference in plugs? Ie trail and leading. When I pulled them it had all four trail plugs in. I of course put in the correct ones, but am wondering what the differnce is, maybe heat or something along those lines?

Last for this thread but not for ever I'm sure! Where can I get factory replacement parts like the centewr console bezel at afdfordable prices. I caled the stealership yeserday, and they wanted $113 dollars for that peice. I restored a Jeep Cherokee and it had alot of after market places that had parts, but I'm coming up with a big goos egg for my new toy.

edit..almost forgot completely...when I give it gas, or stop using the engine abruptly, I sometimes get a clunk, sounding as tho the front of the diff is moving around. Is there a bushing of some sort holding the pinion on the diff that could break or wear out.

Hope these are worthy questions.

Leslie

I have the same clunking problem on my 87 turbo. If the na is the same as the turbo, then your rear differential mounts (or front mounts) are worn through. I havent gotten into the repair yet, but from what i hear its pretty hard
have fun... and good luck!!

Wow, I thaught Id get more info.....but a little update. I got it up in the air to put new tips on the mufflers( came with small round ones) and I found the clunck. There is a rod going from the rear diffs front that mounts to the suspension cradle ( not sure if thats what its called) and then it runs up and attaches to the body of the car. The only thing i can see its good for is to add traction some how by controlling the squat of the car under acceleration. I m not completely sure about this, but thats what it looks like to me. It was actually just loos, I put a wrench on it and it now doesnt clunk.

I also got it inspected yesterday. it passed with flying colors. The emissions were very low. I hope it stays this way. : )

Still looking for help on the other stuff!
