New (to me) Car Maintence
So I've recently purchased an 86 Sport with just under 75k miles. It will become my dedicated HPDE car so it's important nothing spews all over the track or it dies a terrible flaming death at the track. What items have I forgotten about that I should check/replace?
Fluids (replace)
- Engine Oil
- Transmission Oil
- Rear Differential Oil
- Brake Fluid
- Clutch Fluid
- Engine Coolant
Filters (replace)
- Oil Filter
- Air Filter
Belts (check/replace)
Hoses (check/replace)
- Coolant Hoses
- Fuel Lines
- Vacuum Lines
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Thermostat
Battery (check water level)
Injectors (flow tested/cleaned)
Brake Pads and Rotor (check for thickness)

Unless you're just cruising, the oxygen sensor is out of the loop.
If you're not getting an error code, it's OK.
Also flush the brake and clutch fluid - just bleed it until it comes clear.
These trannies love synthetic gear oil.
FWIW rotaries eat steel plugs.
Go with platinums, especially for the leading plugs.

When you check the coolant hoses remember to replace the heater hoses. The hose under the oil pressure sender is probably ready to go and dump coolant under your tires (ask me how I know - and the guy behind me never had a chance).
Also the water hose going to the intake manifold is likely to be on it's way out. Unfortunately you need to remove the upper intake to get at that hose. You can short circuit or plug that hose if you are removing all the emissions equipment.
Make sure that the undertray is still installed. (standard cooling system health requirement)
And don't forget to install some "rear toe steer eliminators". Those bushings were acceptable on the street when the car was new and they are barely acceptable on the street now but they were never acceptable for the track.

Replace the PD with a newer one. I wouldn't go for a new stock unit. It is going to die again.
There is a write up on how to replace it with a newer unit here:
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-archive-72/marren-fuel-injection-fpd-retrofit-writeup-356838/
That thread shows how to replace the PD with a newer Marren unit. If you are going to do it..... do it right.
