New here - Question about cold starts.

Ok, a little bit of background info:

I'm new to rotaries, but not new to the automotive. I build Cobra and Daytona Coupe replicas for a living (And soon GT40 replicas, and actual Noble M12s). www.superformance.ca - Check us out.

Anyways:

Last week I picked up a 1988 GXL, and it's already got the S5 TII in it, swapped in about 8,000 miles ago (on the rebuilt TII), rebuilt tranny (flywheel was resurfaced when tranny was put in, which was like 500 miles ago), has additional TII injectors, SDS supplementary fuel controller, TII fuel pump, braided fuel lines, FMIC, Turbosmart manual boost controller, TurboXS Type H BOV, electric fan, 6 puck copper plate clutch, 3" down pipe, dual 2.5" custom stainless exhaust with dual Saber mufflers, B+G Springs, KYB shocks, Autometer A/F & Boost Gauge, and some other stuff that's not important.

Now, I have a couple questions:

For the most part what interests me the most, is that even when the car's been standing outside for a while (I.E. overnight, although I've had it outside overnight only once since I got her), she doesn't do the whole 3,000rpm for xx seconds, 1,500 (or whatever RPM) for xx seconds, and then dropping down to the normal idle speed of 750rpm.

Now, my only shtick with this is that I have to rev her a little bit at first so she doesn't stall. Nothing big, but I'm just wondering what it is. I have a couple ideas in mind, but haven't yet had the time to try them out, so I figured I'd get the opinions of you fine folks here with whom I will be making myself comfortable over the next little while to get the full potential out of my FC (traction limiting )

The other question is basically... Could anybody here point me in the right direction to get replacement relays/ switches etc for the usual FC malfunctions - Rear wiper not working, front wipers only work on 1 speed. And also, maybe it's the bulbs, but maybe you guys know better: How come I don't have high beams? If I pull the level back, the lights just shut off, I pull it back again, and my low beams come back on.

As I said before, I haven't really had the time to get down and dirty with her as I only get Sundays off, so I figured I'd ask you guys first

Thanks in advance

- Faris.

Oh, just to add...

Anything in particular I should be watching out for? I regularly check the oil and whatnot to make sure it's not low, just about everytime I take her out I listen for anything out of the ordinary, check coolant levels, and all that stuff, etc...

Anything I should do to it to prolong it's life/ increase reliability? I've yet to do the compression test, but I'll be getting to that shortly, just been busy at work and haven't yet had the time to.

But other than what I mentioned up there, and the sunroof taking a little long to open (probably dirty tracks), a part of the instrument cluster not being lit, voltage dropping to exactly 12V if lights + rear defroster are on, everything seems to be in excellent working order

All of those things I'll be taking care of shortly

Thanks again.

OH.

One more thing...

Every once in a while she just doesn't want to start.

Clutch is depressed, she's out of gear, I try to start it, and I get nothing - Not even a crank.

The other day I was driving, and the engine was still probably a bit cool, but maybe about half a mile away from my driveway, I coasted in neutrel from maybe 3,500 in 3rd, and she just died as I came to a stop... Coasting in neutrel. Then she wouldn't start for maybe 4-5 times of trying to start her by turning the key. Then all of a sudden she fired right up on the next try.

She will do this once in a while.

Minor flooding maybe?

Not exactly sure what's up with your idle during coldstart, now when your gearstick is in 1st it won't idle to 3000rpm. If the stick is in neutral thats when it hits 3k. Might also be a vacuum leak causing it to stall a bit during start.

The relays on the switches on the FC do actually go out because of the type of relay used. I bought my rebuilt switch on ebay for like $45.00 I believe. Also, Icemark rebuilds alot of parts for FC's and he's currently rebuilding my window switches, warning panel and AC logicon for me as we speak.

Not sure about the Headlights, bulbs aren't that expensive, try replacing them and see if that solves the problem, if not, then someone else will have to help you fix that because I honestly don't know.

Just check your oil regularly, you will have to add atleast 1qt every 1500miles since these cars burn oil to keep the rotors lubricated. If your burning more than that, then that is a problem. The alternators on the FC's aren't the greatest alt's in the world. Most owners upgrade their alts to FD alts because of the amperage gains.

These cars do have a neutral switch to start them, you might want to check your wires on this switch to make sure you don't have any shorts causing it to work intermittently. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the help guys...

But I'm sad to say, that as of yesterday, around 3:20pm eastern time... She no longer exists, in 1 piece. The road was moist, going uphill, hard compound summer tires on her, lost control, went over a curb, countersteered out of it, started heading towards oncoming traffic, countersteered her right back, over the curb again, took out a speed limit post, countersteered back onto the road, did a 360 through 2 lanes of oncoming traffic, when it was packed, everyone doing about 40-45mph. Went backwards into a curb, popped forwards upon impact, 2003 Accord either ricoched off me or swerved to miss me and went straight through a bus stop post, and into a light post. Both his air bags deployed, coolant everywhere, smoke under the hood, but luckily he was fine, not even a scratch on him. Somewhere along the way a Durango got involved, but all he's got is a badly scuffed front passenger side rim, no biggie.

And there I was, sitting in my FC... feeling her pain as blood was rushing out of my right hand all over her, got a gash at the back of my head, left collar bone is fucked from the seatbelt, I can't lift anything with my left arm right now. Have a big bruise on my lower left part of my abdomen, and my right hand is pretty well cut up.

*sigh*

On the bright side, from the short glimpses that I remember looking at the front end, it didn't seem too bad other than the bumper (from hopping the curb repeatedly). I'm going to bring her to my house and strip her completely apart. I'll probably keep the powerplant and swap it into a good shell... The rest I'll just sell.

Oh well, you live, you learn, you get **** fisted by the insurance companies, and the cycle starts all over again.

At least now I have a winter project...

Thanks again guys, I'll still be sticking around.
