New Engine concerned with prior problems..1990 gxl

Ok so im going to try to get my rx running again. its a 1990 gxl...the original problem, before it sat for a couple years, was upon start it would run very rough..it would clear up after i gave it some gas...it didnt usually do it on cold start, but after it was warm..

***(EDIT)-This all happened on the old engine..have yet to install new engine...any sources for a good reman or low miles engine would be a great help***

The apex seals were on their way out, but im not sure that was exactly the problem...

Eventually the car would not crank at all...I check for spark & fuel...both were present...I pulled the plugs to find they were covered with gas. I cleaned all the plugs and tried again..same result no start...I then thought my spark, while present, might be too weak..so i scored some jy coils..same result..no start.

I bought brand new plugs and tried again.. same result..

I then tried to "tinker" with the ign timing @ the dist and it almost started 1 time and then nothing again..

I'm not sure if this is a common problem or not..

I want to try to get an idea of what it might be, because I dont want to get a remaned engine put it all back together and have the same result due to a sensor or something else simple like that.

Just keep in mind the engine was 170000+ miles..so i'm not sure if my problem was due to the apex seals failing or something possible like a temp sensor sending a bad signal telling the engine to dump tons of fuel..

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

From what I read it sounds like the engine had flooded. You should try deflooding it. Other than that not sure.
