New Engine came in to day

Got my j-spec motor in today, and I think I may have to upgrade my intercooler before I thought I would have to.

I'm no rocket scientist but i think the following could be an issue...

And then there is this little dent in the upper intake. Not sure if it will need to be replaced or not...

They work for me.

That damage doesn't look too bad, but I'm no rocket scientist either.

both the intercooler and the UIM should be replaced, the IC looks cracked through the sheet aluminum and the UIM is likely cracked internally, you don't want a piece of aluminum flaking off and going through the motor.

Nice "New" engine.... I hope you rebuild that thing before you drop it in, especially after seeing damage like that on some of the externals of the engine. Theres no telling how badly someone misstreated that engine.

I think the IC damage occured in shipping. So I am going to send him the picture and see what we can do.

But yeah I am going to do a compression test first and if it tests decent I won't be rebuilding right away. But if its low I will just be stripping it down to a short block and taking it to my engine guy.

i'd change that manifold before you even start it. like karak said, there may be internal damage. a dent like that would require quite a bit of force, who knows what it did to the ports/actuators.

I would make sure to take that up with the vendor as soon as possible - if you have paid already for the motor chances are that you won't get anything back for the damage since *technically* buyer beware, especially on used engines.

Any of the Jspec's Ive bought (which were -mostly- duds) I have checked them out head to toe before I even take a nickel out of my pocket. If the guy has a problem with you turning over the engine before you buy it, or putting it in the air to have a peek at it - chances are he's hiding something.

But definetly call him back for some credit on the damage. Its worth a shot considering how un-commmon stuff like the UIM is........the I/C, well that happens, they're pretty fragile, but come on? the UIM, what did they practice drumming on it or something?

Nah the guy is really nice, He's actually in Canada so going to check it out wasn't really an option. But He has been very up front, and even threw in a jspec, ECU for me that wasn't included orginally. So we will see. I told him that if every thing paned out well I would take care of him.

damn, I hope that's not the only thing wrong with that engine...

Is it an s4 or s5?

I also have a stock top mount intercooler sitting in my room, if you want to buy it, shoot me a PM.

you hope thats not the only thing wrong? Gee thanks... lol I hope that was a typo..

Anyway, I was unable to find any local importers here but it's ok.

It is supposed to be an S5, not really sure how to tell right off the bat. So if you see anything that screams not an S5 let me know.

Here's my website for the project. I will try to keep it as up to date as possible.

NA 2 TII Conversion

Well if I can't get the top mount IC fixed for a really low cost, I will just go to Front mount, Which is what I want to go with anyway.

Here is the guy's ebay store. Like I said everything was as described, and the only problems I had was with UPS frieght but i think it was just with their local branch. And the little IC damage that I need to file with them. Prices are very reasonable or competitive. And I highly recommend this seller. He says he gets these in quite a bit. And he has S4's and S5's. He even included the ECU which I wasn't aware it was included So I am happy and now I also have a n333 ECU to sell. lol

It's a 50/50 chance whether its a good or bad motor when coming to J-specs usually.

I spent 900 dollars for two J-specs. The first one was a S4 with low miles (unknown). The second was a blown S5. The vendor told me prior to purchasing that he would include the second blown motor if i payed 900 for both.

I bought the second motor for spare parts.

Best thing about this, i spent 900 SHIPPED to my door.

The first motor, i opened up, and it looked better than my old room-mates 26,000 original miles stock TII motor inside. The rotor housings were almost perfect.

The second motor was infact blown on the rear rotor. I ended up selling the side housings and keeping the good rotor.

It's all luck, unless you have a trusted vendor.

Well I went and got a snap on compression tester, So I will be testing it as soon as I can get the engine to where I can turn it over. I tried the starter but it sounds like the starter isn't engaging so I followed the advice from what my searchers yeilded and that was to bang on the starter a bit and then try it again. Well now that starter is dead. So I took the NA starter and hooked it up and I tested it before I bolted it up and it engaged and turned. But now it's just spinning and not engaging. So I dunno. I can turn the motor by hand, Will that be enough for the compression test?

Thanks everyone for the help so far.

that's your opinion, cast aluminum is like glass when it is hit hard, though the face that is hit may look ok the other side can have a massive chunk of metal that flayed off, much like a BB hitting a piece of glass.

Ok the UIM is going to be replaced, so no worries there. For me better safe than sorry. Plus it gives me an excuse to take stuff apart.
