new elec fan, wont turn on and smokin radiator

i installed my new electric fan today. its a 16" perma cool. i wired everything up and i know it works fine. but it wont turn on now that i put the temp sensor part in. it never turns on? how hot do i have to get it? my temp gauge was sitting near the middle of the bar, like usual. it never got hot. but the radiator smoked like crazy? whats up? is the radiator dead? and how do i check to see if ive cracked the water jacket? i read somewhere that if i turn it on w/ no radiator cap and it gurgles, its got a broken water jacket. is this correct? should i relocate the fan sensor somewhere more accurate? ive got it on a radiator hose right now. upper one to be more exact. does anyone know whats wrong?

what temp is the sensor set at? maybe it's still too cool for it to come on. is you uper hose leaking now that the sensor is in it?? that would explain the smoking.

i think it opens up at 170-190. its on the upper radiator hose, the rubber part. ill double check the temp. opening. and the radiator is still smokin like crazy, could it have a leak? or a messed hose? i was thinkin maybe there is something stuck in it and its cloggin up. what do u think?

it's on the hose?? or in the hose?? is has to be in the coolant. if it's on the hose it's not getting hot...

for the smoking there would have to be something on the outside of the rad, so either it's leaking or something else is on it that's burning off. a clog on the inside won't effect anything on the outside.

I have my temp sender for the thermostat that turns my fan on mounted to the top edge of the core of my rad. right under where the upper hose connects. It is directly touching the aluminum core.Mine is a tube style sender. It seems to work well.

Here is a picture of mine. The two zip tie to the left of the rad. hose holds it on.You can see the wire running from it if you look close.

What KIND of sensor do you have? There are ones that just fasten TO the radiator... then there are the capillary tube type, that actually go INTO the cooling system. If it has a long copper tube with a bulge on the end, it's supposed to be on the upper radiator hose, going inside with a little rubber thing to make a smooth surface to seal, and tape around the whole thing. That's what I have on mine, and it works great. Pain in the butt to install though.

I don't recommend perma-cool fans either. I have one, and in hot weather with the A/C on it just doesn't do the job. It needs a shroud.
