Arrow New Custom Wing

Hey guys. I havent been around much on the forum but I do still keep an eye out every now and then. Anyways I have a stock wing from an s5 gtu that I have decided to mdify just to play with. Anyways I took some pics to show peoile that may be intersted in how to do stuff like this to make a design of their own. I am not making any replicas or anything for sale. This is strictly informational.

I took a stock wing a took some foam that I bought from Michaels two years ago. I put the wing over the foam and cut the impression of the wing onto the foam that way the edge would fit. I made a shape I liked and then flipped it over on top of another peice of foam that way it would be symmetrical.

I then used hot glue to bond the peices to the wing. I did a little sanding and trimming just to round the edges off that way the fiberglass would lay on it more easily.

I took fiberglass which you can buy in a pack at advance auto parts, and laid it on top of the foam and about an inch or two into the wing. I sanded that part of the wing that way the glass would grip better on the wing. I trimmed the excess glass off and also made little rips where the glass would bend so that it wouldnt bunch up when the resin took to it. You wil need to do this at the corners. Small tears. Also fray the edges with your hands as well. It helps.

I took fiberglass resin which you can buy from advance auto, mixed it up as they said, used a two inch paint brush and simply brushed it on the resin, let it soak as I moved along and went back and flattened it out as it soaked and applied more as needed. When the resin and mat would stick to the brush, I simply put more resin on the brush to make it more wet as I flattenned it out.

If you put too much hardener in the resin it will cure too quickly, so be careful to be conservative with the hardener.

I did each section and just the upper portion and the sides. Trying to get the glass to stick to the underside would have been a pain in the ***, or I could have stood the wing up on the tips but that would have also been a pain. I would rather do two layups and clean the edges later. ALso when everything has been applied check the glass when it becomes semi cured and a little stiff you can trim the excess off with a razor blade, rather than a grinder or jigsaw later. This is a huge time saver.

do yourself a favor and use that as a plug for a mold and make another part, when that urethane flexes in the hot sun your new foam is going to crack and fall off
