Honestly it makes since for the new apex seals to not last if they're designed similar to the Rx8 seals. The Rx8 apex seals never touch the exhaust port. The rx7 does, and i would guess on down shifting it even has to somewhat push the exhaust out, something the rx8 seals were not meant to do.
Sure in stock configuration, this isn't a big deal, but at high boosts when exhaust pressures and temperatures are extremely high, who knows...

On decel?
If it's on decel, stock ECU cuts fuel, so there is very little load on the engine and the apex seal.

We've seen 1150C EGT's on one motor, and the apex seals didn't warp.
I would think this is about as extreme as a turbo motor would see.
That's around 2000F!
