Transparent paint hopefully, normal paint doesn't shine through very well.
Testors makes various colors for tinting model/RC car windows. I've used Testors transparent black paint to tint tails in the past, worked great and light shined through perfectly, with light coats.

I was actually considering doing 'all red' tails on my s5 lights before I just decided to remove the diffusers/clear-coat etc.
I just remembered, we used the Testors red-clear, on my buddy's 92 Talon taillights and it REVOLUTIONIZED the look of the back-end, lol.
It looks SOOO much better. Simply because it got rid of the orange
lol

Yah I made a mistake and tried Nite-Shade on my rx8 tail lights. I wanted to see what kind of a look it provided compared to Testors.
Long story short. Nite-shade = crap, Testors = perfect.
After clearcoating/wetsanding/polishing the tails a few times, it came out acceptable. But when I have more time I'm going to wetsand all of the Nite-Shade off and redo them with Testors.

Yeah, VHT is pretty hard to work with. But I've been *mostly* sucessful with it. My FTP's, blinkers and reflectors are all tinted using it... I tried to re-do a different set of FTP's, but the stuff kept 'spider-webbing'. I dunno... I've had sucess and failure, but overall I like the stuff.
It worked out great on my N/A's taillights:
It's a light coat, but it turned out well...

Yah the light coats seemed to look normal, but I was trying to get it a bit darker and once I started going deeper into the coats it was looking more purple/black rather than straight black. Plus it was looking dull rather than glossy.
The clearcoat/wetsand/polish/repeat fixed the dullness a tad, but it's still not glassy or as much of a deep black as I'd like.
Some comparison shots. Left looking crappy and right after some wetsanding and clearcoating a few times, then polishing. Also top pics are without flash, bottom with.
Another, left is good one after sanding and such.
Both finished.
I want to redo them in Testors merely to get a deeper black color.

huh... I gotta find some pics of my friends VR6 Corrado, who's tails were done with VHT... They're perfectly black. Although you're right, they do turn 'purple' under light. I dunno, I think that's just how 'black' pigment is. For example, I'm dying my N/A seats right now, and the RIT dye I'm using turns purple as it gets diluted...
I've found that several light coats, followed by a THICK final coat is the best way to do Niteshade.

Can someone inform me on how to get the s5 tails apart to remove the diffusers? I don't want to break them, but they've been glued together for 17 years. How does everyone else go about getting them apart?

I really wanna remove that inner panel on the tails, then tint them black. That would like awesome on my car. Can anybody tell how to do that. I want it to be quite black, i need to know what kinds of polishes to use, and what kinds of paint to use for the tint. PLZ help, i guess ill be doing this on my own.
