New '86! Woo-Hoo!
Just got a *sweet* deal on an '86!
$150 bux for it! All that's needed is a clutch....Well, and a battery, but still. <shrug>
Suprising this is, Pep-Boys, here in Gainesville, actually HAS one...
IN STOCK!
I'm pretty sure they have one Turbo Clutch in stock, as well.
I went out to this little po-dunk place called Windsor and picked up the car, yesterday, towed it back to my house, and started gutting it. The rear-end is clean and clear, and the back seat was layed to rest, as well.
Anyway, we fired it up, and revved it up, some to blow out some crap....
Sucker runs! Three foot flames, and all!
I pulled the hood, as well as the airbox... The idle seemed to smooth out after pitching the dead-*** filter.
One question, though: What would cause the car to not want to idle until like after 15 minutes of leadfooting? My girl held it at about 1500rpms, until we told her that rotory idle can be held lower (She's used to pistons, and much less than 1200rpms is on the verge of stalling... unless you have hi-lift cams).
Any ideas?
Initial project: Clutch.... Then maybe getting the new (*ahem*) rotors turned, and then it's up in the air....
Anyone in the Gainesville, Florida area who's done a clutch before, want to lend a hand?
Last step (Waaaaaay down the road): BOOST, baby.
Sorry... I'm bad about boosting the crap outta stuff.
In the back of my neighborhood, there's another 2nd-gen (I think), but it has the rounded tailights.. Maybe I should go over and talk to them; try and get pointers....
OH! I'll post pix, as soon as I can find the damned USB2 cable to my cam.

check the f.a.q in the sticky at the top of the second gen page for some pointers on how to get her running smooth.
welcom to the club!

Thanks, Man. Appreciate the welcome!
I'm not gonna lie: I don't know JACK about rotary engines... PISTON, I know upside-down, inside-out, and backward. Rotary? Fuhgettahboutit!
Only thing I DO is that the exhause it not stock... Instead of the standard 'Y' pipe, setup, it's been reduced to a single pipe, coming out on the driver's side of the rear bumper.
I'm also pokin around to get a good aftermarket clutch and flywheel assembly. I figre, heck, the OEM clutch isn't gonna hold up for long during drift sessions, or simple powershifting (eating the local rice-bowl 'Si').
Any suggestions? Strong, light. CHEAP... Well... Not CHEAP, per se. Just NOT horribly costly.
Thanks, again!

Nononon... What I meant is that they don't have an 86 TURBO clutch, but I know they have an RX7 Turbo Clutch... Not ness. an 86.
Jn2k108: Dood.. You got a SWEET deal. You have mods AND seats... My seats are a minor step above milkcrates and zip-ties.
I'm about to post the pix...

I GUESS it's alt of work, ahead. I mean, all the interior's gonna have is a D1 spec cage, a pair of racing seats, harnesses, and maybe a police-style mount for my laptop (to run both diag (ALDL) and to harness out to my amp for MP3 playing) and that's all.
As far as the doors and dash are concerned, I'm going to do them in CF and 'glass. Like I said, earlier, I just pulled the triple din console (headunit, tape deck and EQ) out, so that space will accomodate gauges, and a F/S monitor. Maybe touch-screen, I dunno, yet.
I'm going to change out the POS stock speakers (yep, it can with 'em!), and throw in some good, clear ones in the front, and maybe put a couple of custom-podded 8" subs in the rear pockets...
Quality, not Quantity.
Bodywise there's not much to it: A little light work (nothing ricebowl), Headlight conversion (Hm...) and then a kit. I like the Yellow one here (because when I go boost, it'll fit the frontmount): https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...94&postcount=1
Flat black the sucker, and, outside of rims, that's IT for appearence....
In my line of thinking, kits are gonna be LAST. Drivetrain, suspension, and brakes are at the top. I will get a headunit and some throwaway speaker, initially, but I want some clear stuff.
Anyone got any ideas for clutch/ flywheel assemblies? I looked at Spec, Exedy, Centerline, and someother companies, and have pretty well ruled out ACT. They want WAY too much for their kits. Other than ACT, any ideas?
Thanks!

That's why I own it and not someone else. Somebody else looked at it and said the same thing... Hell, a couple of years ago I'd've said the same thing, but I've done a good deal of custom work in my life, and this is one to add to the list.
I'm not rebuilding this car for anything but one primary purpose:
DRIFTING
Looks? Fuckit! Creature comforts? Kill 'em and make a scarf! I think the "D1 spec cage," statement gave THAT away, Ja?
I work about 100 hours per pay period, so TIME is my issue, not the lack of ability or skill. Rotaries are a new platform, so thus my asking for help.
The one thing about me, is that I'll ALWAYS listen to a person's advice/ opinions/ statements, regardless of their stance or experience level. You never know what a person does (or doesn't) know until they talk!
Ah, well... I like both uphill battles (I live at the top of one,) and underdog warfare (I'm a cat owner).
RTFO!

My suggestion is buy another car to drive daily and TEAR EVERYTHING OUT OF THAT CAR. Take it to nothing. And then build from there. It will most likely be easier to build from nothing than start with that. Strip out all the sound deadening and pull everything from the engine compartment. Then pick up TII stuff and build it.
I think you are kicking yourself by doing stereo stuff early.
Anyways, have fun. Just my $.02
