I take it you checked pump presuure after the filter, and pressure was ok, and you checked fuel pressure running through regulator, and you say you have spark, how about compression....If all these ingredients ok, will need to check elsewhere.

Hmm....my 87 TII did the same thing ended up being a blown water seal, the white smoke was coolant getting burned off.

You blew a water seal, man that plain sucks. If everything else on the inside is fine you won't spend too much money if you do it yourself. just the gasket set and maybe replace the oil o-rings and all the springs.
