Need transmission help.

My '90 conv. has been stuck in my driveway and it's starting to really bug me.
Here's what's happening:
When i shift into first gear the car doesn't move and dies.
In neutral the car goes in reverse.
In second the car goes in reverse.
And the gearshift won't move past second gear.

Does this require a rebuild or could i possibly get lucky with a easy fix?

Any help is appreciated.

when and how did this start happening? you could try taking the shifter out and making sure it's sitting in there right, not so sure how it couldn't be but it's worth a look. i really have no idea how this could happen unless your tranny is totallly screwed

It was driving fine, no problems at all, and i parked to go into the store and when i came out, i backed out of the parking space and then i couldn't get it to go forward. In order to tow it home i had to ride holding the clutch down because it won't even go into neutral.

A friend of mine took the shifter out and said that there was way more grease than there should be. But other than that, i don't thiink he saw anything else wrong with the shifter assembly.

It sounds like the internal interlock between R-5 & 3-4 is stuck, leaving reverse engaged.
This can happen in a well worn tranny. Or it was rebuilt and they left out the interlock pin.
You might be able to manually pull it out of reverse, but you have to finagle the lever into the reverse position, then pull it to neutral.
To see what's inside, download the NA transmission section of the FSM. There is a link in my sig.
If you shop around, you should find a good used NA tranny for ~$200.
