Need tips/help for autoyard engine

Need tips/help for autoyard engine

Hey there guys, I purchased an '88 13b N/A from an autoyard to be used as a substitute engine while I work on/rebuild my original motor. The engine was advertised as running before being pulled out the wrecked car. Unfortunately I do not know how long the engine has been sitting outside in the yard. There is evidence of alot of rust where the coolant hoses are connected on the engine.

Now is there anything I can do at this point (the engine has been stripped down to a short block form, fan, airpump, intake mani, exhaust, rats nest taken off) to ensure that I can get this engine running once I install it into the engine bay? I need all the good advice/tips I can get. Thanks for reading in advance and spare no dirty details short of disassembling the keg.

No tips guys? Would cleaning the ports help start up? would running water through the coolant lines help get out some if any rust in the engine should there be any in there? Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Hmm, you can visually inspect the apex seals through the exhaust port. At least make sure that they are all there.

Try and oil down the interior and then rotate by hand mad make sure you get three good "pops" out each spark plug hole (with the plugs removed of course).

I'm not sure if checking for runout on the eshaft would buy you anything.

Check for torque on the long bolts.

yea, it couldnt hurt to try to flush the coolant passages of the engine out if its been sitting... why not?

Do a compression test. Get a tranny and starter (just a starter works, it takes a bit of creativity to pull off though.) and spin that motor up while you have a friend jam a compression tester in the trailing spark plug holes.

Why don't you rebuild that motor and when you finish it you can replace it with the one in your car.

I bought the engine with the intention of using it on the car while i was going to rebuild the original. I have not driven the car since Feb. and I been having the itch to get it up and going asap, instead of my plan of just rebuilding the original engine. I hope other people can understand this feeling of not driving their cars for long periods of time due to money restraints and whatnot. Those were my thoughts when I purchased this second engine.

Btw guys, thank you for your input. I did a simple compression test with a generic tester from Pep Boys, and I am getting 120. I will get a better reading when I bring it to my local mazda mechanic and use the proper test equipment. Keep the tips rolling guys, this is good stuff.
