Need some help throwing money at my car...

ok its tax time people and after a rough year of getting it from uncle sam hes giving a small portion back... ok i got roughly 1000 to 2000 bux laying around to sink into my rx7 my dad just gave me. not running so well but i think the tps sensor i got in today will fix that. once its running like it should, what should i be grabbing after market wise? im a total newb on rx7s, im coming from honda and know nothing about them at all. havent seen a huge aftermarket out there for the rx7. was thinking a nice clutch(might hold off since i just learned to drive a stick), a big tach, maybe MSD ignition wiring. and that all i could really think of... i want some serious power gains tho so can i super charge it(its N/A)? would it be smarter/cheaper to do a t2 conversion? maybe get some NOS for the N/A? dont really wanna spend the all the money on the motor cause i need some for the inside 2, i mainly just wanna be able to smoke hondas and mustangs....

thanks

For the love of everything that is sacred, please skip on the monster tach...

(I just have a thing against pointless 5" tachometers... I mean, you've already got a buzzer and a shift light... and it's not like the stock tach is that small, or that inaccurate, nor can your engine rev to 10,000 RPMs anyway)

You should tell us what you already have if you want any advice on what to get...

Stand facing the car.
Plant feet firmly approximately shoulder width apart.
Grip money bundle loosely.
Rotate hips bringing money bundle around your body - right hand if you're right-handed / left hand if you're left-handed.
Keep your eyes on the car.
Swing money bundle around and aim directly for the middle of the car.
Release money bundle as it comes over your shoulder.

Good luck!

Maybe he actually meant "sinking money INTO the car" which is a bit more complicated a process but follows the same principles

Anyway, I'd say get everything that's missing from the car and get it running well first, and buy aftermarket stuff later.

For example, do you have an under cover? It's pretty important for cooling and for the car's aerodynamics, but I'm sure plenty of RX7's don't have one any more (mine doesn't). (it's a big plastic panel under the engine...)

After that you should probably refresh the suspension with new bushings, shocks, and springs (if you need them).

Then change out whatever you don't like about the car... maybe a shift ****, one of the pedals, the steering wheel, etc. But don't buy stuff because it's cool... buy it because it will actually improve the driving experience (an aftermarket steering wheel, for example, is nice because it's smaller and makes getting into and out of the car easier, and it's easier to hold onto)...

a full bucket seat is probably the best mod for actually racing (Not for bling!), since more power or more grip in the suspension does *** if you can't keep your butt in the seat to drive the car... of course that only matters if you're actually *turning* during said race.

After that, I'd get an exhaust system you can live with, in terms of price, performance, and most importantly, sound (a low-pitched drone WILL give you a headache after a while...). And maybe a K&N filter for the standard airbox... since just leaving a cone filter in the engine bay by itself isn't really a good idea.

But if you want some real performance, the only practical choice would be a turbo swap (well, as far as rotaries go).

If you *know* the TPS is bad, fix that. You can find a good one (from the FS section) for around $40 shipped or so.

If the clutch is BAD, replace it. If not, then leave it (especially if you're still learning).

Definitely NEVER get a "big tach", since the stock tach is quite large and perfectly visible--with a shift light and redline buzzer.

No need for an MSD.

If you're looking for N/A power, make SURE that everything is working perfectly in stock form. I would also hold off on the NAWWWWWZZZZ.

Aside from that, you have to decide what your goals are. A decently mod'd N/A can make 160+whp, which is fast enough for most 'daily drivers'. Wheras a turbo-motor swap would easily get you 200whp++ for less than $2k. But the turbo swap might be more than a (self proclaimed) n00b can handle.

You know, I tried that, but the coins just wreck my paint.

Here's a couple things, basically the plan I've been going on.

- Change fluids, filters, belts, hoses. (Not the most fun, but necessary.)
- Fix stuff that's not working. (Aux ports, VDI, Idle, Heater, etc.)
- Replace stuff that has degraded over time. (Suspension bushings, struts, shocks, seats, interior, weather stripping, etc.)
- The important gauges. (Water temp mainly.)
- Remove crap you don't need. (AC, dead animals...)

Well, that's basically my plan, of course I don't have an extra grand sitting around. For some real upgrades, I'd get some new tires. Grip rocks. Ask these other guys about the Camden SuperCharger or a 13B-RE or 13BT swap. (It's not really cost effective to squeeze power out of a NA.)

Erik,

I'd tell him to sell his N/A for all it's worth and take his $2,000 combined and buy a TII. The only thing I "miss" about my N/A is the weight... : ) Of course... I don't get to drive the TII much yet : ) lol It's getting a starter today. New clutch hydraulics plus starter! Yay!
