Need some advice
I have about $200 dollars right now, and an 86 na that needs to be rebuilt. (I think it does anyway, the story is, it used to burn oil every morning but then it would run fine all day, and then I didnt run it for 5 days. When I finally started it, it kept dieing after idling for about 10 seconds. After a while I got it to keep the RPMS at 4k without dieing. But then the fun began... After one minute of running it the whole block was filled with smoke, I mean dense **** that you couldnt even see through. I figured "Oh i guess this is just the oil burning out, it will only last a minute or two" well i kept running it, and then when the smoke got too dense I stopped, waited for it to clear and did it again. I did this for about 30min then decided it was in need of a rebuild. Currently I have everything unhooked in the engine, but debating what to do before I actually take it out.)
Ok well here is what I have considered:
- Buying a 91 J-spec turbo engine for 900 dollars
- Replace the seals on my engine and just stick with an NA
- Then eventually get a bolt on turbo package?
- Or just sell it and try to find a decent cheap TII
any ideas? Please reply. Also I live in lincoln CA which is outside of sac by like 20min. Thankx - Chris

Hm....
burning a lil oil in the morning is pretty normal.. Just leaky oil injectors.. nothing to worry about
The non-idling part sounds a LOT like an intake leak...
But uh...white smoke == coolant.. How's the coolant level? Is it all dirty now? Really sounds like you lost a coolant o-ring.. perhaps warped the internals in the process..
...unless you did the ATF trick right before it started smoking!

Sorry Chris,
I'm gonna have to go with Gab88na on this one. If you are looking for more power, just sell it and start looking for a T2. If you want to stay stock then yes a j-spec engine swap will do the trick, but if you want more HP, then sell it and get a Turbo II.
Although upgrading your car to a T2 is an option, everyone I know that has done it, spent a lot more $$$$$$ then they had planned to get it running correctly. Most of them also ran in to a boatload of problems too. In most cases you end up spending upwards of $5k just to get a tempermental turbo charged frankenstein with just a little over 200Hp (when it runs).
For that same $5k you can buy a nice 89-91 T2. Put a high flow exhaust and intake on it, and you will have around 225 "reliable" horses. From there you can save up for the big HP upgrades.
Just a thought....
