NEED SERIOUS STARTER HELP!!!!!!........ (searched)

Hi guys,

So my 1991 JDM GTX turbo has being 100% reliable until now.

I gave the car a full 60 000km tune up when i got it... deleted emissions, redid grounds, all new engine/tranny mounts, fluids/filters, gaskets, check turbo, new battery, new terminals, rebuilt starter with new solenoid(2 months ago), rebuilt alternator, new vac hoses, professionally cleaned injectors, etc etc etc.

It has always had the intermitant 'click click' starter problem... It got worst yesterday, it literaly took 10 clicks to get it started. Seemed like there was a click comming from the starter and under the drivers side dash(i found out it was this littly magnetic relay connector, i popped it open and looked to see if anything was out of place.. nothing, all the wires were connected). The weird thing was that when the starter clicked, if i held the key in 'start' then after a few seconds the starter would engage??... It didnt do this all the time, but about 50% of the time

So i thought it was my solenoid, so i bought a new one and installed it on my car yesterday... after i installed the solenoid i hooked the + terminal back on.. then the - terminal, however as soon as i touched the negative terminal a bunch of sparks were producted, so obviously i took it off right away.. Everything was hooked up right at the solenoid, i phoned the starter expert about it this morning and he told me the correct way to wire it up (which is exactly how it was hooked up before i took off the old solenoid).

OK... so i had hooked up the solenoid right... so WHY am i getting sparks at the terminal???

I had a long look at the FSM, not very useful, however i did find that the ground or the ignition could be the source of the problem.. I know my ground was good, but i checked it again, it was fine.

So i am really thinking it is my ignition switch (250$ from the dealer).... I am in the process of testing it for contenuity. It is a bit confusing using the chart in the FSM... Also the FSM (series 5) shows that the ignition switch has 4 pigtails... 2 or which have 2 wires, 1 pigtail has 1 wire and the other pigtail as 4 wires..... mine has 2 pigtails with 2 wires, one of one wire and the pigtail that is supposed to have 4 wires has only 2?!?! So maybe the fact that my car being RHD is a little bit differant...

At any rate i am taking the starter with the old/new solenoid back to the starter expert so he can check it again.... That way i am not barking up the wrong tree.

Can anybody help me.. i need serious guru help!!

I took in the starter... it was grounded inside... Not sure what happened but i this saves me a HUGE headacke.

So im going to plug everything back in and see what happens. However i think that the starter 'click click' problem will still be there..

In my mind, it has to be the ignition switch.

It could be faulty even if its new.

So now im still at square one....

My starter still goes 'click click' to start it. sometimes there is no click and if i hold it for a few seconds the starter will engage???

could this be a relay/fuse?

I was reading somewhere about a 20$ fix to the 'click click' problem.. something to do with a relay and a few wires? Does anybody have a link?

if all else fails, replace starter.
my starter blew trying to start my car after my rebuild.
me and a friend bought a reman one from Kragen,
swapped out the bad parts and switched it with the new ones,
and basically rebuilt one. =P

only problem was with that Kragen one was the housing was different so it didn't mount on the same way.
but we switched 'em anyway along with the gears (since one of the gears rubbed against it) and it worked.

I am still having the 'click click' problem, however if i hold the key in the start position for a few seconds the starter will engage..

Ignition switch??

Should i do that 20$ relay mod? If so where is the link to it?
