I don't have a second gen, but conventional wisdom says no...

Driving the car to break in the engine occurs from putting it on varrying degrees of load, I believe that is why they tell you to vary your RPM and speed... and just idling it means it is doing little work. Why can't you just drive it?

DO NOT do that! u need to break it in at varying load/ rpm to make the apex seals and **** wear evenly. if u break in at a set speed and idle, this will not happen and u could end up with a smoker or low compression almost immediately. its not worth the chance man.

just make sure the garage door is down when you do that...that way your engine stands the same chance as you do...actually even up the odds by running a hose from your exhaust to the drivers side window?....j/k

Why not drive it late at night or really early in the morning? When I got my FC, I wasn't supposed to drive it yet until I got some paperwork done but drove it during those times when no other cars are around.

Drive it around the block a couple hundred times, or tow it to a big parking lot and drive around in circles.

Put it up on jackstands, put it in reverse and those miles will come right off! Your dad will never know you took the Ferrari out!

Oh wait, nevermind.

I'm in the same boat. I have about 500-1000 miles left on my break-in. Putting on about 10 miles a day driving the boy to school and another 50 miles on weekends. Other priorities make it tough for me to just drive aimlessly adding miles and the anticipation of adding the mods is starting to kill me! I just can't wait to bring the idle back down to 750.

Why not take it to the 1/4 mile track and do some mild runs? Pro drag teams just put the fresh engine in the chassis and rag on it like a normal engine, but I am sure they clearance their engines differently (ie. more clearance).

Yeah im thinking of just f-in runnin it. Im guessing the power is between 7-10,000 rpms. I have to drive it right now under 5k rpms wile I have absolutley no power. even at 5

Once it is running and youre satisfied everything is stable, set the idle to around 1500rpm and let it be. Since compression is constantly changing, there isn’t much use in adjusting and readjusting idle and TPS settings until breakin is almost complete, as the settings will change almost daily. Right now, the more you can drive it, the better. IT is very helpful for the first few days even to just let it idle in the driveway all day.

thats from Kevin's website at Rotary Resurrection. I think varying rpms and loads would be the best..but thats from a guy who has done twice as many rebuils as most people on here.

Talking F#@k THE POLICE!!

Just drive it around without registration. What's the big deal? I live in California and have been doing that for ages. They just give you a fix it ticket anyway. I got pulled over once in two years and had to pay a hundred dollar fine. It would have only been 10 dollars but I refuse to buy new cats and spend all kinds of money smogging the bastard! I also don't pay insurance either. Have never been in an accident and saved 150 dollars per month for 6 years. You do the math.

you can't buy temp passes or anything? if a car doesn't pass smog. and you need to get between the house, shop, and testing place. how do people do it there?

here we can buy 1-7 day pass permits that don't require passing smog.

Von, why don't you set up a day or too that can be just for breaking in the motor. Go down and get a trip permit (temp pass) And drive it for a day or too, that should be more than enough to break it in.
