Need to pick out a turbo
Ok so i had my heart set on upgrading to the BNR turbos now that i blew my old s5 but im not so convinced on this dudes pricing because i mean for 750 i can get new turbo and mani on ebay or some ****. Does his prices seem a little steep to anyone else in here?
I mean what options do us TII owners have these days with turbos? Where the hell do i shop for one and whats a good price?
As far as having to know compressor maps and all the technicle bs i really dont want to get into that becuase my needs are very simple. My engine will remain almost completly stock except for the fact that its going to be completly open exaust and i need a turbo that can handle that kind of flow. My goal was only to attain 300-350 hp with future mods and a rebuild. But for right now i just need somthing thatll get me there without spending 700 bucks.
Thanks bros

I think the '89+ (S5) turbo based stock hybrid turbos are a great cost effective way to go for the 250-400RWHP range. I have been very happy with Bryan's service and work at BNR with my Stage 4.
Look at what you get w/ a S5 based stock turbo.
1) Stock turbo location and fitment. Don't have to fabricate oil and coolant lines/adapters or downpipe adapters. Turbo weight is low and back in the car as well.
2) An indestructable cast iron manifold. Retains EGTs well for boost response lower engine bay temps too. Stock heatshield fits on to help this.
3) A truly divided manifold, turbo and even wastegates for better boost response.
Ebay FC set-up
1) close to stock turbo location. Will have to fab flange to adapt downpipe to turbo, but close enough to fit up. Have to fabricate oil in and out of turbo- probably not a water cooled center section ( whick is less reliable).
2) Lighter, but crack happy stainless manifold. Stainless does reject heat well to keep it in, but they are so thin it will heat engine bay more. Add heatshield/blanket and stainless is SURE to crack and added cost since stock won't fit.
3) Undivided manifold and turbo. Worse boost response.
4) The big advantage- you can choose the hotside AR (larger than stock) to suite the compressor. This should ultimately yield more peak power (especially on a ported motor), but the BR Stage 4s do very well by using a larger exhaust wheel in the stock housing (ie 400RWHP)
I would do the S5 based stock turbo again (especially on stock motor), or save up for a NICE quality (expensive) aftermarket turbo, manifold, wastegate and requisite lines, downpipe adapter.
Or just do a stock rebuilt turbo or more mild compressor only upgrade if using mainly stock everything else. BNR Stage 4 will need full fuel system/control as it makes 300-400RWHP.

Most of the labor goes into replace the compressor wheel and rebalancing the whole rotating assembly.
Almost any 4th grader can slap together parts (for the turbo).
It's takes a million dollar machine (i.e. VSR balancer) to do dynamic balancing of the rotating assembly.
That crap-*** (IMNSHO) eBay turbos are failing left and right.
"You get what you pay for."
You also are not figuring in the oil / coolant lines, and the intake and downpipe adapter that need to be custom made.
Or is the kit complete so it drops right in?
You're looking at several hundred dollars more just to get that eBay crap to fit and work well in place of your stock turbo right now.
So your $750 purchase just balloned over $1,000...

Yeah thats what i figured once i really thought about this and researched, is that most of the cost it in the labor and the conviniece of being able to slap it all back together in stock form. THanks for the informative replies.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Ebay turbo manifolds. If you get one pretty much just expect it to crack.
I (hopefully) will be getting a BNR for my 87 latter this year. I have heard so many good things about the quallity of thier work. I really arnt even considering anything else.
Just have to pick between stages now.
