Need a new intake... suggestions

I know this has been spoken about numerous times, but I have been unable to find any truly useful information.

I currently have a stock intake, but the top of the stock airbox has been cut off by a previous owner. I need to replace this, and don't want to replace it with stock.

What should I do?

Buy a kit? What kit?
Buy a kit, add a cold air box? Can I buy a cold air box?
Just buy a filter, and get custom piping + cold air box?

Any suggestions would be great.

Get for a decent cone filter kit (the bonez I have is good and decently priced) and build a CAI. Theres plenty of threads around about how to make them for cheap.

Good suggestion. You could also do the method of piping into the area under the headlight. Like SonicRat (?) did it.

Depends on the setup. A few hundred at the least.

So pretty much just an open filter with no cold air box?

Yeah. There are very few pre-made CAI kits, and they are quite expensive.

On my N/A, I placed a cone filter in front of the tire, give it a nice aluminum box with a baffle in front of it so water can splast into the box but not actually get to the filter. I might do this with my TII aswell when I go to put in a FMIC.

I have an extra hood and was toying with the idea of modifying it by cutting a hood scoop into it and putting in a CAI box that will seal to the hood when it closes. Anyone have any ideas as to whats the worst case scenario for this "ram air" system? Will the air swirling around in the box be too messy to flow into the filter smoothly? or do you think it will indeed force the air into the system faster?

something looking like this ... I think it looks tight honestly
