Question Need a little advice

A while ago I bought a '90 convertible (red, black) and have been working on it to make it look nice after years of neglect.

Im almost done so I pulled the tranny which I knew was bad. The story goes that the previous owner was driving it and it dropped all of its tranny fluid. He filled it back up and went out the next morning to take it to work and it wouldnt sit into gear. After hearing that I immediately thought "he overheated it". I drop the tranny and pull the pan off the bottom and sure enough, the oil on the bottom is gray and gritty and the magnets have metal flakes on them. So the tranny is shot and its time to take the next step.

Ive been wanting to do a TII conversion and hopefully an auto->manual to it (havent looked into that much, but I figure with another rex there for a blue print it shouldnt be to tough). Question is, do I part out this car's parts that it loses and the TII that I get to do the swap or keep it all and eventually turn that into an NA Auto? Also, if I rebuild that tranny, could I ever get the money out of it if I sell it? Autos arent exactly high demand in sports cars and it isnt cheap to fix.
