Need help w/ NA S5

I picked up a NA S5 for $50. All it needed was a fuel pump and spark plugs. I replaced both and had good compression on front and back rotors.

I was planning on making this my NA project car. But the other day I was driving it around in my back yard, I drove it to my neighbors behind me turned it off got out went in their house for about thirty minutes. When I came back out It took two times to get it to crank. Started to drive it back to my house and then it turned off. I realized that the fuel gauge was wrong and the car was out of gas. I got two gallons of 93 and put it back in the tank. The car still would not start and idle. everytime I would try to crank it it would rev to about 1800rpm and then die. Checked the spark plugs and all of them are firing. Also tryed to start with spark plugs removed to ensure that fuel was going into the chamber.

So basically I have fuel and spark but it still will not run. One more thing I forget to mention is that when I was trying to start it and it would rev to 1800, if I touched the gas it would pop kinda like backfiring but not as loud or as strong.

What should I do?

how did you test the spark plugs?

Would the engine crank to 1800k while you were turning the key of after; running on its own?

How did you test the compression?

I have a feeling this all has something to do with the new fuel pump.

Either way a $50 car that almost runs still aint a bad deal.
