need help. turbo leak

I have a 88 TII and i'm confused about my turbo. it recently started leaking coolant, and most of the water leaks from the end of the turbo towards the downpipe, but it leaks on the plate connected to the turbo right before the downpipe gasket.

does anyone know if there is coolant flwoing at the end of the turbo there or is some coolant line in my exhaust manifold leaking and going all the way down through to the end of the turbo?

if anyone know where any main coolant flow areas are on the exhaust manifold or turbo and could show me or help me with it, i would appreciate it.

The only coolant at the turbo goes through the CHRA.

check right above where its leaking on the UIM. mine used to leak from there and drip onto the turbo right at that plate. Its the coolant feed line for the turbo.

sorry, but what is the CHRA? and I will check the UIM, but won't have time until tomorrow. was your leak visible from the UIM? because I can't see it dripping from mine. it seems like it's leaking internally but still finding it's way through the turbo until the end of it where it keeps leaking. i'm leaning it to be internal beacause it makes water spots all around the metal plate at the end of the turbo because it's being spun out from the inside maybe? i just don't know where the coolant line is on the turbo manifold? if there is one even?

is there any way that line in the CHRA could be broken from the inside making in flow inside the turbine housing? although i'll check it out when I remove the turbo tomorrow to see what's wrong with it.

The two hard lines that enter your turbo (as you look at it in the car) horizontally are the coolant lines. They bolt in with the large 17mm banjo bolts. You probably can't see the one on the manifold side very well but you can feel it if you try.

The lines that enter your turbo vertically are the oil lines btw.

If you are leaking in the turbo area and you are SURE it isn't that mother ******* coolant line hidden under the intake manifold dripping down onto the turbo... (I deleted that **** and I recommend everyone do so.)

Check the crush washer at the banjo bolts or more likely its the gasket leaking on the other end of the hard line where it enters the manifold just above the turbo. Its under two 10mm nuts and easy to access. You can make your own gasket for that one. Maybe its that "plate" you are talking about?

actually I opened it up a few days ago and found out that it's not the turbo. but there;'s coolant int he chamber and it's flowing all the way down to the turbo from where I can't find yet. but I also saw some coolant in the lower intake manifold and at the intake part of the rotor housing itself. because when i removed the turbo and the turbo manifold and cranked the engine, it kept spitting out coolant, so I figured it wasn't from the turbo at all.

Sounds like you need to replace the 2 water-jacket o-rings where the LIM connects to the short block. There is also a gasket too, don't forget to replace that if it's in bad condition. I just did my 2 weeks ago. Now I'm dealing with the banjo fitting coolant line to the turbo....I need washers, searching for them, went to 3 hardware store, no good....found the answer on the forum, 16mm aluminum washers from NAPA. gonna try that tomorrow.

good luck on finding the problem.
