the gears on the motor could be stripped, the cables could be stuck. The sunroof really is a tremendous pain and you'll only find out the hard way!

the sunroof system is quite simple once you have it all apart. compared to new cars at least. it has 2 cables ran by the motor. drop your headliner and unbolt the motor. see if the gears are stripped. most likely your cables are sized in the tubes. mine where at least. best bet is to find a sunroof assembly on the forums or junkyard. the cables are about 120 each from mazda if you can get them out of the tubes.

i had my left one locked up and was able to get a tube from the classifieds and purchased a cable from mazda. i have a working sunroof but i shoud have got both cables as they strech with age. mine creeks a bit but it works.
