NEED HELP with Shocks.
NEED HELP with Shocks.
Gentlemen,Sorry this is so long but here goes.
What type of shocks are most people using for 50% Street & 50% Auto-X application? I was leaning toward AFCO shocks, but as always I am open to suggestion and expert guidance.
Car is a 1991 5 speed N/A Coupe. Soon to have a Miata Torsen Rear end setup as soon as I can lay my hands on one. Running 17"x8" 2004 Mustang GT wheels at each corner. Tires will probably be BF Goodrich KDW's in 235-40x17" on Front and 235-45x17" Rear. Possibly going to a 245 or 255 in the Rear. Should I be using a different Brand and Model tire? Knowledgeable input needed. Not just someone who thinks it looks good, but tried and true information on what ACTUALLY works.
I realize that the stagger will create an under steer situation. Will it be that bad though? From what my understanding is it's only 20m/m between 235-255 which equates to approx. slightly more than 3/4" larger footprint in width. How much under steer would this really create percentage wise? Would anyone care to make an educated guess?
There know there are lots of guys in here running second Gens. in Auto-X and road course racing. Come on guys give me some solid input here. What tires and shocks should I be using? What setup do you use?
Has anyone had any experience with using a product called "Percy's Wheelrite Wheel and Tire Simulator"?
Thank you in advance for your great input in this matter.
Sincerely yours,
Robert
I'm not too sure what exactly you're trying to do?
AFCO does not make any drop-in shocks, and I think their "generic" struts are not made for serious road racing.
If you're going autocross, I'd look at wheels that are LIGHT.
You don't have too much power, so I don't know why you're insisting on running those heavy 17" wheels?
I'd get a set of Vert or similar 15" andrun 225 wide tires on them.
Road racing is a whole nother ballgame, and you need to start to concentrate on brakes at this point.

koni w/ ground control coilover sleeves should do you right.
Set yourself up with some 4 pot mazda calipers if you don't have them already. I have Hawk HP+ pads on my car, but I suggest the HPS for lower dust, longer life, and less noise.
