Need help Rx7 86 Back fireing

I have a 86 rx7 and i just wondering why it starts fine and ideals decent dont stall but and has good power in first gear and second feels like it loses power and it takes a sec for it to get some power kinda like a powerban on a dirtbike. it backfires alot and pulls me back and fourth in the next gears. anyone have any ideas. the smog pump air flow is off of it. and its sucking cold air. wondering if that could be it or if it is where does that run to so i can connect it. i also looked at the exaust and there is no leaks. please help thanks to all who takes time to reply!

Hey mate,

I have just got my first RX-7, but have driven dozens and one drove just like that, but also idled like crap lol. Everyone seemed to say the same thing: Sounds like a vacuum leak :/ Install a A/F guage and see if it's starving when it seems to be struggling.

It was interesting though, it almost seemed like the car was saying "Oh, so you want me to go? Are you sure? Sure? ok then *braaaaaaaaaaaaaap*" :P
