Question need help on engine choice

I need help on engine choice. There are so many choices from rebuilding my own motoring to getting different j-spec motors. My ride is 88 TII w/ 95,000 miles on the clock. I try to set up a long term project which hopefully get to 400 rwhp level. Now the question is, what platform should I start? I know all other component such as fuel and ignition should go with the project, too but I try to set the first step which is the engine. Please help.

unless you want a ported motor, then just buy a used 88 T2 motor. j-specs are the easiest to come buy and prolly wont cost you more than a grand. if you want 400 hp then you will need a turbo that is not stock and the 88 motor can take it, so just stick with that

A street port and a large turbo should do the trick.
