Need help with 89 T2, won't start!
Last Sunday I got in my car and it wouldn't start. If I turn the key to the on position all the lights work, interior lights/functions, radio etc. When I hit the starter switch (or turn on with the Key), the reverse lights come on, but the car is dead.. no click, no turning over.. just dead, almost like trying to start the car without the clutch pushed in. So far I have tried the following:
-Replacing the starter
-Tried starting with both clutch switches (on top and behind pedal) unplugged.
-Tried starting with both clutch switches unplugged, and the plugs jumped with a wire
-Checked Reverse Safety Switch and Reverse Light wires on tranny, they look fine
-Checked for 12V going to starter at all times, checks out fine
-Checked EVERY fuse in the box under the dash (near clutch pedal), and one under the hood, several times
-Changed battery
-Tried jumping off another car
-Checked ignition switch in steering column - all wires are attached and plugged in.
Currently with the starter installed, if you take a wire and run it from the Positive terminal (on the starter) to the small terminal where the gator clip goes on (to trigger the starter), the starter will turn on and the car will crank as normal. I am assuming the small trigger wire isn't getting a signal when the key turned on. With the key in the ON position there is some voltage going to the trigger wire (my voltmeter is ancient, it just lights up the "5V" LED, but not the 12V one. When I try and start the car, the voltage doesn't change.
Anyone have any ideas? Is there a starter relay anywhere on this car that could be bad? It's just dead as a doornail, and as lame as it sounds, the car started and ran fine the night before.. I backed it into the garage and now it won't start. Between driving it and the current problem, I installed a boost gauge, which consisted of running a tube through the firewall into the engine bay.. that's it. Any help would be appreciated!
