need help 4500rpm

87 NA bouncing idle from 1500-2000rpm and when im driving it doesnt go pass 4500rpm basically redlines at 4500rpm if i punch the gas and try to make it pass 4500 it will back fire(BOOM LOUD) so i turn off the car and start it back up step on gas to 2500rpm and hold it there for about a mintue then the bouncing idle is gone and it can go pass 4500...i dunno why it does this in COLD starts, or if the car sit for more thaan a hour?

Are you letting your ar properly warm up? Or are you just running out, starting it in the AM, and raping it?

I think there is are two butterflys that close due to vacum durring cold start to keep secondary butterfly's from sucking air while the engine is cold to prevent driver from raping the engine.

Posiable reason for back firing is engine starts to run extreamly rich.

Also check tps or vacume leak which might be causing bouncing idle.

maybe you just shouldn't take it past 4500 while it's cold?
