Ok on my car one wire is black solid and one is Black ribbed with red. But they both screw into the same place... Does this make any sense? I've got a gxl and cruise control.
Here is a thought... Since we are not running with anything plugged in... do you think some of the devices on the harness/chain may have a ground in it that is required?
Like the stereo? I completely removed my Blower motor and AC core... could this cause problems electrically?

Well I had a long conversation with my dad. He brought up the theory that if I don't have everything plugged in yet, there may be a ground somewhere that's not making contact. So he seems to think that the ground is getting energized constantly. Which... in theory means that if everything was plugged in again... there wouldn't be a problem.

I'm gonna try this...
see what happens.

well black/red is never ground, so I would be looking at that first.
And Mazda does not daisy chain grounds, they star ground (several central spots where multiple grounds connect to the body).
The radio, however grounds through the body and factory mounting bracket.

Icemark, then it's not black red. It's definately not black with a red stripe... It's more like black with brown dots. This HAS to be a ground. There is nowhere else for the terminals to go. I'm going to be doing more tests tomorrow.

More theories: Possibly an unused pair? In which case they it would be an open circut by running into each other.
Honestly I need to sit down with the FSM and trace out every body ground on that damn harness and check it. I'm sure by the end of this ordeal i'll know more then i ever wanted to about the CPU/Dash harness.
Looks like i won't get to it until the weekend anyway. Work calls.

So, f1blueRx7, did you figure it out? Somehow, my problems ended. I unplugged my CPU, took it apart to visually inspect it for any burnt circuits, and found nothing. I plugged my horns back in, plugged my CPU in, and it's all fine and dandy-- at least back to the way it was before I messed with those grounds.

I unplugged the last plug on the harness on the passenger side... and ... Everything works now. It's crazy. I even re-did all the grounds. It works great now. Will post pictures.
