need of a dampener?

i am looking into removing some weight from my rotating assembly sugh as lightened flywheel and removing clutch fan for e fans... i know piston motors need dampeners if this is done past an extent but any effect on rotaries?

Not so much, although kits such as you're describing do exist.
Unlike a piston engine, all the rotary's forces are centered around the eshaft, not flying up and down, in and out.
Depending on the condition (and stiffness) or your motor mounts, a faster revving rotary might tend to lay over to the side a bit more but nothing like the gyrations of a piston engine.

I've seen them on a couple of 3rd gens and Mazdatrix makes one that bolts to a strut brace for 2nd gens.

You're talking about a harmonic balancer, not an engine damper, right?

This post was confusing to me because the OP was talking about whether a rotary needed one or not, and was considering removing his fan clutch and lightening the flywheel to shave some rotating mass, which leads me to believe that he is, in fact, referring to a harmonic balancer.

Rotary engines don't need harmonic balancers for the same reason clokker was talking about. All the vibrations of having pistons and conrods slamming up and down makes larger engines require a harmonic balancer, while some smaller 4 cylinders don't even have them! Rx7's don't have one, so there's no weight to remove there. You can remove the stock fan and run an e-fan, just make sure you read the archive about making a fan shroud.
