In Need of Assistance.

I have a 91' GTU with about 15x,xxx miles on it.

I changed the spark plugs and flushed and filled the coolant system the other day. When I finished I noticed I had a very large coolant leak somewhere. It was flowing out from the bottom of the water pump, the gasket had gotten messed up and things might have been a little loose.

I ordered another water pump and I put it on today. After installing it we started the car and things seemed to run fine. That's when the trouble started.

I heard a noise and pulled into a parking lot to check it out. I get out and its smoking under the hood. Pop the hood the top radiator hose was pumping itself like a drunk dry heaving after a particularily bad night. It was shooting the water out of the fill cap, which was tightened down. But it had so much pressure it was shooting it out.
I hurried home and as soon as I got there it was starting to make the noise again. My dad pulled the fill cap off and was shooting the hose into it while water was gushing out. It stopped the dry heaving but if we let it sit for a bit it would do it again.
I know you might ask what my water temp said.....I don't know. The wire connected to the temp sensor broke off while my dad tried to get the last spark plug tightened in there,(just what I needed).
I have a mechanical aftermaket gauge which isnt hooked up because im still debating the best location to put it (tap the water pump housing or a radiator hose). I put it down the fill opening and it read the temp at normal was about 180 constant and then it started climbing again and shooting water out again(the fill cap was off), and doing the dry heaving thing.

The dry heaving thing makes the top radiator hose compress itself and then it shoots the water thru the radiator and out the fill opening. It makes a sound like a very loud thunk thunk thunk mixed with a pow.

Could this be my thermostat and I need a new one, Or do I have a very serious problem?

I live an hour and a half away form houston and there are no rotary shops closer than that. This is my main mode of transportation and I'm not exactly making the money since im a senoir in high school.

If you need better descriptions or information I'll try my best to clarify anything. I know most of you on here have alot of experiance and are very knowledgable in these areas, that's why i'm asking for your help...plus I don't really have anyone else to turn to. I've done all the work on the car myself and the mechanic I ask advice from won't even touch the car, he just tells me what to do and what I need.
If anyone can give me any help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thermostat installed upside down maybe...new one? Regardless, at the next opportunity or whenever you install a new thermostat, drill a small 1/8" hole in the disc for an air bypass. This mod makes filling and "burping" the coolant system a lot easier since you won't have to wait until the engine is warm and the thermostat opens to purge the system of any trapped air.

I didnt change the thermostat. I'm wondering if the thermostat is bad or if the "burping" thing is normal.
