Name that bearing!
Ok so I have a whining noise when my car is on. Its definitly a bearing and its definitly transmission related. Aside from the fact my transmission is totally fucked (and leaks gear oil) I need to figure out what it is. I'm swapping a new tranny in soon and I want to make sure the problem is fixed. A friend told me it was a pocket bearing but it sounds like its the pilot. It whines when the clutch is out but stops when the clutch is pushed in. Is it an internal bearing on the transmission, throw out bearing, or the pilot bearing. The pilot bearing was brand new but is not sealed. The throw out bearing wasn't new and god knows how old it is. And the transmission is shot. So which could it be?

when i did my clutch, i replaced the TO bearing but not the pilot and got the same whining sound when the clutch is out but stops when the clutch is pushed it, it is definatly a pilotbearing, now i just gotta kill this clutch so i have a good reason to do the job right this time, lol

Mines doing the same thing. Im thinking its my throwout bearing. Im gonna spray some white lithium grease on it and if it doesnt stop im gonna assume that its my pilot bearing. Just my opinion man.

clutch out the pilot bearing is not spinning since the tranny input shaft is spinning with the e-shaft as one unit. basically rules out the input bearing and pilot.
clutch in the throwout bearing is spinning since it is holding pressure on the pressure plate, the input shaft is not spinning. the input bearing could be damaged though also which would explain why it is leaking but these complaints don't add up to an input bearing faulty probably just incorrect fluid level or just a worn seal.
my 2 cents = replace the tranny(if you plan on it anyways, or just the seal if not), pilot and throwout bearing. it's much simpler than dropping the transmission again.
