n/a rear end

I towed this car back to my house and when i backed it into the yard, the back wheels locked up but would roll forward. THere is no driveshaft or trans on and the ebrake wasn't on. Is this rear end toast or is there something else wierd with it?

how was the car towed? If it was towed 2 wheels from the front there is a good chance you tore up the rear end even if there is no driveshaft.

It was just towed from the front on all four. It was about 5 miles with my intrepid.

do you know anything about differentials?

you are thinking of transmissions...

sounds like the calipers are siezing or the e-brake is hanging up.

that or the mesh from the ring and pinion got messed up because there was no driveshaft and no pressure on the pinion and it got out of wack

The four bolts are out so that's not it. I still have to check on the brake issue, but also could be what rx7b13 said probably.

If it rolls freely forward, yet locks tight and stops in reverse, it's in the diff. If the brakes were sticking, it would have the same effect in both directions. Back in the days of drum brakes, they stopped better going forward than in reverse because one shoe usually had a longer pad.
