And the hinge bolted tight to the hood, tends to crush out the paint.
See any steel against aluminum just disolves the aluminum without a isolating layer of epoxy, or epoxy paint or other non-metallic, non-conductive layer.

is the aluminum hood an alloy of some kind? My GTUs has an aluminum hood on the dealer receipt (from 89), but the hood is still magnetic. Did the guy before me change it or something?

no, the alum hood is not magnetic. Sounds like the guy that owned it before you wrecked the front end and put a new hood on.

he was caught in a hail storm (he lived in the mountains) and he had the car repainted about 4 years ago, so that must have been when it happened.
Damn, well, 20 lbs is really nothing, you couldn't possibly notice that extra weight.

Muahahahahahaha! I have heard about these metal to metal reactions on aircraft parts where an alloy bracket is rivited or bolted to the aluminum fuselage, for example, and the parts must be painted with a special paint to prevent corrosion. Maybe I will just use nylon bolts on my aluminum hood conversion and paint up the latches and hood separately beforehand.

What happens is the alum under the hinge mount on the hood disolves if the wrong hinge is in there.
I am surprised you guys never heard of this... didn't they offer metal shop or electronics in any of your high schools?

I learned it from my water cooled computer, using copper, alluminum and steel != good idea, clogged that ****** right up, needless to say that's been fixed!

woooohooooo just went out and tried to stick a magnet to my hood(its 12:15am)....that biaaatch doesnt stick!! Ahhh the powers of aluminum. Now i have a question, near my front bumper my hood is a little and i stress A LITTLE bent and my friend said that since its aluminum it cant be fixed and i have to get a new hood. Is that true...i really hope it can be banged out!!
