what kind of metal reaction are we talking about? like with the steel hinges on an aluminum hood. what happens?

It's sort of a corrosive reaction. You could always use a foam/rubber spacer with aluminum bolts.

think of what happens with your battery posts. only thing is that there is relatively little electrical activity between the two so id on't see it as being a big deal. if anything stick a thin sheet of rubber or something between the two and separate them.

yeah, paint would work, if there wasn't any metal to metal contact... like through the bolts.

And the hinge bolted tight to the hood, tends to crush out the paint.

See any steel against aluminum just disolves the aluminum without a isolating layer of epoxy, or epoxy paint or other non-metallic, non-conductive layer.

I swapped out my na Steel Hood with a Aluminum TII Hood...No problems at all. B'c I pay attention to detail, I'll give It another look and check for corrosion. Doubt It though.

If you didn't swap hinges.... well I guess we'll see in a year when the hood rots out and flys up at highway speed...

is the aluminum hood an alloy of some kind? My GTUs has an aluminum hood on the dealer receipt (from 89), but the hood is still magnetic. Did the guy before me change it or something?

You've been punk'd...

no, the alum hood is not magnetic. Sounds like the guy that owned it before you wrecked the front end and put a new hood on.

he was caught in a hail storm (he lived in the mountains) and he had the car repainted about 4 years ago, so that must have been when it happened.
Damn, well, 20 lbs is really nothing, you couldn't possibly notice that extra weight.

Muahahahahahaha! I have heard about these metal to metal reactions on aircraft parts where an alloy bracket is rivited or bolted to the aluminum fuselage, for example, and the parts must be painted with a special paint to prevent corrosion. Maybe I will just use nylon bolts on my aluminum hood conversion and paint up the latches and hood separately beforehand.

Your serious? weight is a huge factor when getting more omfff (sp?) from your rotary rocket. I think alot of guys would debate that.

Are you sure all 88 GTU RX-7s had aluminum hoods? I've had two 88 GTU's now and the hoods felt pretty heavy on both.

2yrs now, and I've seen no rust corrosion whatsoever. Perhaps It's a slow build up. I think this weekend I'm going to look Into the matter further.

nah... no rust on the ones I have seen do it.

What happens is the alum under the hinge mount on the hood disolves if the wrong hinge is in there.

I am surprised you guys never heard of this... didn't they offer metal shop or electronics in any of your high schools?

I learned it from my water cooled computer, using copper, alluminum and steel != good idea, clogged that ****** right up, needless to say that's been fixed!

Actually, it mentions it in my 1987 Mazda factory shop manual.

It can be fixed if you are patient enough.
