my wife's tII revving to rev limiter on it's own
today, my wife was driving her '90 tII to do some shopping. while shifting from 2nd to 3rd, the revs shot straight up and it went to rev limiter, so she shut it off and pulled over. i met her where she was pulled off at to check it out. the throttle cable is still intact and the throttlebody appears to be returning to the position that it should. this happened to me once with my FD when i didn't get the intake manifold buttoned down all the way. it was sucking in more air than should be. only thing is, we've never done anything to this car and it's bone stock. i can't see any hoses that may have come loose or any cracks in the manifold. i'm not as familiar with 2nd gens as i am with 3rd gens, so i wanted to see if this has happened before. i tried to search with no luck. i got the intercooler off and starting getting into taking the throttle body off, but i wanted to double check here before i go ripping too far into it.
thanks

it's happened to me..rarely but it's happened. check the TB cable. then all vacuum hoses. IMO the biggest culprit is the intake manifold gasket. Either between the upper & lower, or the TB to the UIM. some starter fluid with a high ether content sprayed on those areas, sometimes works well. Is it still doing it?
on a side note my wife also wanted a TII, but one of us had to have a reliable, low maintenance car. Not too mention more than 2 seats. So she got a WRX. The first ones in West Texas area. She even tried to get a stretched FD limo for our wedding.
That happened to me when I rebuilt my motor. It was the plates in the TB being stuck open. I sprayed a bunch of WD 40 on em and kept moving em with my hand until they freed up. never had that problem again.
Do you have the clip on the cruise control cable nut? had the same problem on my nonturbo. intermittently hit the rev limiter... turns out that I had dropped the clip when i took off the cruise cable, never found it again, and never installed another one. The cable had enough play under high throttle that it would get stuck.
It's NOT and intake vacuum leak.
If the leak was enough to cause the revs to hit redline, it's also big enough to cause the AFM to side back to the rest position.
This means absolutely lean AFR's, which will kill the engine.
The FD's, OTOH, use a MAP sensor as it's primary load sensor, so it doesn't know the difference.
Intake leak causes MAP sensor to go toward "0", causing the ECU to think you're opening the throttle.
Thus, it adds more fuel to all that leaking air...viola, really high idle.
The culprit can be narrowed down to the throttle body sticking.
Most likely something causing the throttle cable (or cruise control cable) to jam and prop the throttle plates open.
If the UIM was recently touched, I would guarantee this be a kinked throttle cable, but you've already ruled that out...
It might be something fell back there like a stick that caused the throttle plates to stick open?

i had this problem once before when i was driving to seattle. it would stay open from 5000 to 8000. so i pulled the manifold off and cleaned the throttle plates and i also cleaned the whole linkage on the outside and i havent had the problem ever since. hope this helps.

As soon as this happened, it revved really quickly to rev limiter, and I shut it off and pulled over. I thought maybe it was juts a freak thing...so I left it off for a few seconds and tried starting it back up...and as soon as it starts the thing revs to the moon...and that's the last thing I need is to blow the motor...so I shut it off and called the hubby all the while praying it's just a stuck TB. I have only had this car for about 2 months...but it has never done this to me before. We have barely touched anything since getting it...and the closest thing to touching the motor I've done is changed the oil. Guess I know what my day will consist of tomorrow...
I REALLY hope it's just the TB or something stupid...

i'd have voted on the TB myself, but wanted some outside views. when pressing the gas pedal, there's a little play for about an inch, then you can feel it grab and start moving the throttle cams. the cams themselves on the backside of the TB have a little slop in them and the cables aren't tight. the cam on the front side appears to be in it's rest position. even if they were just partially open, i wouldn't think it would cause it to rev that quickly. either way, i'll try to get the elbow off before the TB tomorrow and see if the valves are indeed stuck open a bit.
any trick to getting that bugger off anyway? seems to be a lot more crap in the way than i had on my FD
