my turbo II wont idle warm

sorry if this is a repeat but im new and need a quick answer if anyone can lend a hand..... i just got my rx7 and had a gasket leaking so i replaced the exhaust manifold gasket and turbo gasket... then i put everything back on and the idle wouldnt go down from about 2 grand warm or cold.... figured out that was because the intake wasnt on the turbo all the way... put it back on and it ran fine cold but once it warmed up the car just stalled out.... i put a 3 inch turbo back exhaust on it when i replaced the gaskets and i dont know what it could be... the car runs amazing up to when the needle starts to get in the warm area on the dash then it dies... any imput would be nice....thanks

Sounds like you have a vac leak. Make sure to check all vac lines and Maybe even replace a few esp above the turbo!

Have you done any other mods to compensate for the new exhaust?

Also try resetting the AFM. If you had the battery disconnected during your gasket change, when you hooked everything back up and re-connected the battery, the AFM will be compensating for the un-metered air. After you fix the air leak, the ECU will still try to compensate by adding fuel and killing your motor. Double check all vacuum and air intake stuff and then unplug your battery to reset (negative), then give it a try. Just a thought!

all i did was disconect everything the manual said to in order to take the turbo and the manifold off to replace the gaskets... then i put them all back on and put the 3 inch exhaust back on... i have a maf adapter and a filter ready to go on but when i went to fire it back up it wouldnt run once it was warm... i checked vac leaks and couldnt find any where i was workin at in the engine bay... i was wondering if the maf could be going out and i dont know how or what to test to try... my friend seems to think its got a clogged air filter making it run rich or the maf is reading incorectly and causing it to die out... what do you guys think about that is there a possibility in that ?

Did you disconnect the battery at all? If so, then just disconnect the negative again for like a minute and hook it back up.

I sure hope you're smart enough of an rx-7 owner to know that if you're not running at least an FCD with your intake and turboback exhaust you're probably going to lose your car sometime in the next week here. And even then, besides an FCD to be safe you should run upgraded injectors and a fuel pump. If you still want your car you should put stock exhaust back on.

As for your idle problem, I have an 87 TII but when I blew my exhaust gasket im assuming just like you did I replaced the whole turbo system with an 89 s5 turbo. I don't know why it's not idling warm, but the problem with mine was it wouldn't idle at all, so I did what many of us here have done and manually adjusted my idle bypassing the BAC valve. I have several vac circuits open on top of not having an air pump or anything, so for me the manual adjustment is a must.

What is your idle set at before it heats up to the point that it dies? Is there any idle fluctuation on your way up the temperature gauge from the point that you first warm it up to the point where it heats up to where it won't idle?

Another thing to think of as well is that you just took off 20+year old vac hoses. Esp the ones above the turbo cause they can get old and develop cracks causing vac leaks. Try replacing them. It's cheap to do.

i did replace the vac lines first and that didnt fix anything so i dont think thats it... i just put a exhaust and a intake on it.... the car runs at around 1500ish when its in the process of warming up and theres no fluctuation or anything it goes to the 1500 to 1700 area and it idles there untill the car gets to where its warm then slowely lowers back down and then dies... i think that the maf sensor is back because i took it and wiggled the wires and it starts and idles perfectly fine so im thinking about trying that... i checked the bac and everything in that area and they all check out to be ok... and also y would just puttin a exhaust and intake on the car cause me to loose it i dont plan on cranking the boost up till i hit the fuel cut im going to set it at about 7 psi and i just want a better sounding rx7 to drive every day thats goin to be reliable and sound good

The cat on the car causes the car to run at lower boost. When you get rid of it and replace it with a downpipe the boost goes up. You have to port your wastegate or the boost will cause you to hit fuel cut.

HOW do you plan to set(control) the boost to 7lbs?
IF you haven't ported your wastegate do not boost. I 'mean' once you get the car to idle

Also if you replaced the vac line going to the pressure sensor make sure you use the orifice (restrictor pill).
