Is my tranny bad?

Ok guys I bought a used T2 tranny as part of my T2 drivetrain Swap I've got everything put back together, haven't started the car yet but at first I couldn't get the shifter to push into any gears, after some light force on each one I got it to go into 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse. However even with some force I can't seem to get it to go into first or second, it almost seems like the shifter won't go far enough to the left to slide up or down into gear, there is a spring on the left side in the shifter casing(which my NA didn't have this spring). Can you guys think of anything else that would cause this besides my tranny being bad?

Did it shift through all gears, including 1st and 2nd, before you installed it? I'm no tranny expert but I have a t2 tranny and it shifts through all gears out of the car. If it didn't shift out of the car then I suspect you have a bad tranny. I was told that you can't get tranny rebuild kits anymore but check mazdatrix if you are inclined to rebuild it. probably just cheaper and easier to get another used one though.

most shifting issues with the TII transmissions are in the shift selector check "*****". meaning it is partially stuck in another gear. you can manually push the rods back into place by removing the bottom case cover and making sure the 1/2 and 3/4 shift forks are in the neutral position on the gears, they should not be touching or close to either bronze syncro. if they are fine then you will need to work the 5/reverse rod forward and back, you can't see this shift fork because it is in the tailhousing of the tranny.

luckily i'm building a hybrid FD/S5 TII tranny now so i can get pics of what the forks should look like in the neutral positions.

3/4 shift fork

1/2 shift fork

5th/reverse shift fork
