My TII has a steel hood!!!!

I thought all TII's came with aluminum hoods. I just checked it with a magnet and sure enough, it's steel. At first I thought it may be aftermarket, but all of the factory stickers are underneath. WTH????

Do I have the only steel TII hood ever made?

Yep, my old '87 Turbo had a steel hood. We've never found a rhyme or reason as to why some cars have 'em and why some cars don't.

Yeah, my born date is 3/86.

What makes it worse is that the hood is red.

I think it has been determined that the first TIIs to roll off the line had steel hoods. Mine does, and it has a build date of 4/86. I guess that makes it rare and valuable.

Yea, I picked up my friends steel TII hood and I thought I was lifting weights! Man that thing is super heavy compared to the aluminum TII hoods.

Steel here! 4/86 build date. All the ones w/ steel I've seen or read about were these really early early ones.

Fairly rare, I guess.
Valuable? For a lot of reasons, not including the steel hood? Yes.

OK...Here's the scoop on hoods (again):

-most early NAs ('86) had Al hoods
-later NAs recieved steel or Al hoods on random
-all verts came with AL hoods
-all GTUs's came with AL hoods
-sports had AL hoods
-early TII's had steel hoods
-later TIIs had a mix of the two

I think that's it.

My 88 GXL had a Steele Hood. I swapped It for a Turbo II hood. Light as a feather. I think 15 Ibs as opposed to 45Ibs for the Steele one. Correct me on the weight If needed.

Aluminum hood's front latch loop is rivited in, the steel ones are welded in.
Plus, just lift it, steel will give you a workout.
