i have an 87 gx and after i driv for a while (20-30mins) the **** isnt hot at all, but the stick is so hot i cannot hold on to it for more than like several seconds. Im just curious as to if this is normal on these cars, i really doubt it is.

You perv what have you been doing??
Well I don't think it would be the exhaust heat shield's as mine are gone, and mine doesn't do that. I took those things off almost as soon as I got the car, if you get any leafs or flood the car very badly like I did it will catch on fire (I know). I would pull the shifter out and make sure that the box that the shifter sits in has gear oil in it.

Tranny oil level
Mine does the same thing.
The oil level inside the tranny should be visible from the shifter hole?
What if you fill the tranny but still don't see oil there?
I usually change this with frequency.
Most of the time untill the oil pours out the fill hole.

Also check the rubber boots that go around the bottom of the shifter. If you don't know check mazdatrix website it shows all the boots you should have. Yours must be gone completely or torn up quite a bit.

There is an outer and an inner rubber boot. There is insulation (similar to carpet cushion) that should be between the two layers.
When the insulation is missing and the boots are ripped or not installed, hot air (and exhaust fume) is drawn from the under the car and travels up the metal shaft of the gear-shift, heating it.
Replacing the rubber/insulation will keep the heat out.

I replaced both those boot and I didn't notice a heat change, but I did notice a huge difference in the fact that I wasn't being chocked by the fumes when the car wasn't moving.

Nope, it wasn't hot and hasn't been hot yet.

I didn't notice the problem until I was driving with the top down (air has to be flowing) on a hot summer day and reached for a coin from the ashtray. It was too hot to hold.
