YOu will get used to it. When I first drove my RX i thought that it was a real pain in the ***. But now i dont even worry about it, in fact i perfer it over power streering know because its just too easy.

Beaverton, OR!!! Thats ******* classic!!
Could be ball joints, or possible poor alignment angles.
Grease the ****, if possible. Jack the front of the car up, grab each tire from left to right, and try to move the wheel. It will move freely because it has no weight of the car on it, but try to feel for any excessive (sloppy) free play in the steering. If you feel clunks, it is probably tie-rod ends.
If you can move the tire by grabbing at the top and bottom, then your wheel bearings need to be tightened or are worn out.

Manual steering system rarely go bad.  Unless the car has been in a front end accident, I doubt it could sieze by itself - there's an easy test to perform.
Jack the car up and turn the steering wheel all the way left - all the way right.  It should turn VERY easily and very smoothly.  This will eliminate any problems with the steering system itself.

Hey, I've been to Beaverton a couple of times. Ever been on the south end of Oregon near Medford? I used to live there, definatly prefered being south of Portland!

If you're running 225 or thinner tires up front, there is no excuse for not being able to turn the wheel.  Are you female?
