My new (used obviously) RX-7

I am proud to announce my purchase of a 1987 N/A RX-7. I am also here to ask for some possible insight into a few problems. The car is running very rich, high idle, restricted exaust, and starts but will quickly shut down if not on accelorator. Questions... Will replacing the battery help with the running of the car, I have reason to believe the old battery may not be able to handle the stress??? Also, I am going to replace the exaust system with a downpipe and maybe a new cat eventually, my question now though is, does too much backpressure effect how the car idles??? My last question is... does anyone have a diagram of the vacume lines looking at the car from the left side, all of the current diagrams look at it from the right side??? Well there will be a lot more questions but please send me any feedback you can. Thanks a lot and I am happy to join the club. I hope I can start to contribute as much as the rest of you soon.

Thanks,
87RX7121

rich means you are using more gas than you need basically. Running rich reduces your power since not all the gasoline is able to be burnt in a combustion cycle. Rich isnt necessarily a bad thing except for bad gas mileage. I would say running lean is far worse.

Rich means there is too much gas/not enough air.
Lean means the oppisite.

Running rich is bad most of the time.

Welcome, when you adjust the idle mixture don't forget to connect a jumper wire to the coupler.

That is some of the worst advice I have ever heard.

DO NOT just start messing with screws. First, troubleshoot and find out WHY your idle is wrong. Replace or fix what is necessary, then make your idle adjustment should it be required.

Thanks for the guidence and the welcome

Thank you, everyone, for your input. It is still not there yet but it is definatly getting a lot better. Oh yeah, and I have been adjusting those two screws that adjust the idleing (with the jumper cable connected) and I am getting closer and closer everyday.

Thanks,
Rich

ive got a high idle too, usually 1500+ but normally never over 1800.

when i bought the car it idled fine around 500-700 i think. but not that long ago it started to idle high and pop, not so much a backfire but light popping. all i can think is a partially cloged cat and/or too rich.

i hopfully will recieve my S-AFCII soon, but could i adjust the idle set screw to help with idle, it really eats up gas! speaking of which i can smell gas too, which also leads me to go with way rich on mixture. but if changing the set screw could help someone please tell me exactlly wich one it is. [the goldish one on the little actuator arm thing on the TB right; cable coming off it going to the acc. pedal]

thanks much

Yes, if you have a restricted or clogged cat, that will really hurt your car's ability to run or run right...

Thats probally the biggest cause of these cars going bad, it because it keeps the heat in and stops the car from breathing right...

Learn to become a good friend of the FSM. It is the best source of info for RX7, other then this site.

I would fix the mechanicals before the paint. A clogged cat can cause you to loose the motor =$$
