My new RX7
Hey guys I just got my first RX7 tonight! It's a 1990 GTU(I think). 11k on new engine and rebuilt tranny, new cats, pristine black interior, 5-day old white pearlescent paint. My parents bought it for me for a graduation/birthday present. But I have a question too: I am a newie obviously, and it feels like it's lagging in excelleration, like it's starving or something. I think it might be the ports, because it goes away right around 4k when the 5th and 6th open up, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions on what I should do or what might be wrong?

Nice car, congrats! usually the bogging down occurs around that RPM because the ports fail to open. If you don't know the history of the car, change the fluids, spark plugs, plug wires, and filters (fuel air and oil filters), then see if it keeps happening. While you're under the hood, check the vacuum hoses and stuff.

Guys, he said it is bogging on low-end and the problem "goes away right around 4k" which indicates the opposite to me.....that the 5th and 6th ports are opened, all the time maybe.
A couple people have said that their car seems a little less responsive on the low-end when they have wired open the ports. His may not be wired open, but could be stuck open.
The initial suggestion of changing all fluids and filters in excellent. Also, check the plugs. 11k miles is about due to change them if they haven't already been changed once. I burn a set through in 12k miles. Every 4 oil changes. Fuel filter once a year usually. Air filter is cleaned every 6 months or so (K&N drop-in), but I live in a city with all paved streets, so mine doesn't get very dirty. If you live on or drive down alot of dirt roads, you can clog an air filter quickly.
Check and replace vacuum lines. It is a cheap fix and can be done in an afternoon easily, even for someone new to these cars. If you haven't bought one, get a Haynes manual for the car. I won't go without one for all my vehicles, they are the perfect book for the price. If you want to dress-up the engine bay slightly, go to Autozone and pick up a silicon vacuum line kit. They give you enough to do the entire engine (give or take a line or two) for like $15.99.
Good luck and if I missed something here, someone else should pick up on it.

Congrats, i got a red 90 GTU and love it
GO out TONIGHT and get new wires, plugs, all filters, oil, maybe even do the tranny and diff. even if he said its new it good jst to do it all and get it out of the way or atleast check it.
Start learning about the car, if u dont already know anything about rotary's.
I would really recommend grounding the car, really easy and cheap. Also check your battery and CONNECTORS!! they might/probably need to be replaced.
might want to spray a little penatrating oil on the 5th 6th port actuator arms and wipe them down and clean the area up.
***GET A HAYNES MANUAL***
And ask around the forums if u ever have any problems or need help
Do all this and the car will feel/drive 20x better

under 3k rpms the NA doesn't have a lot of power, maybe you just expected to feel more down low... which you wont on a stock NA because of the low torque, torque peaks at about 4k rpms if you care
