My NA shifts hard

My 87 na is kinda hard to shift, especially when its cold. Is there something i can do to make the shifts smoother. like change some fluids or something. I changed my engine oil and filter about 3 weeks ago. Also, the clutch is very hard to push in. Maybe im just a wuss, but it makes my foot cramp up. Thanks.

Wuss

Do you have a stock clutch/PP on the car? Aftermarket (high-po) stuff will noticably increase pedal effort. As for the hard shifting, try running some redline fluids in the tranny. You might also want to double-clutch until it's warm (clutch in, out of gear, clutch out, clutch in, into gear, clutch out).

My $0.04 (cuz my time is worth that much)

You can try bleeding the clutch fluid(see www.fc3s.org for a how-to). Also change your tranny fluid and refill with redline brand. Not sure what you mean exactly, but when the car is in gear can you wiggle the shifter around while it stays in gear? If so you need new shifter bushings which cost around $20-25 from www.mazdatrix.com. Do all that and I bet its alot easier to shift.

my car does the same thing when its cold in the morning. My clutch isnt hard but shifting from gear to gear is kind of hard (only in the morning for a few minutes). It feels really notchy. My tranny fluid was changed not too long ago but I want to put some redline oil in it. Any know where I can get some redline fluids without doing the whole mail order thing?

A local race shop should have it. If not you can order it from www.summitracing.com. Its not too much.

well it does in when its cold b/c the tranny gear oil has trouble moving around when its cold... let the car warm up a bit and put in some redline maybe it wont freeze on you...

Earlier this year I changed mine and I got the stuff from Canadian tire, yeah I know I should've known better, and the bottle said is was the right stuff, then it starts shifting really hard. I find out later that anything with sulfur in it will eat the brass synchros in our trannys and that stuff does. I put some redline stuff in it right away and now it shifts like new. My point being, you gotta watch what you buy and redline is awesome stuff.
