My muffler fell off!

I was cruising down the interstate earlier to day and my damned muffler broke off @ the piping just behind it. My question is: Would it be safe to just cut my other muffler off and get some straight pipes with nice tips welded to 'em? I really cant afford a new muffler @ the moment so I'm looking for cheap alternatives...

At the moment it sounds a lot deeper... Kind of like my buddies Eclipse with N1s. A Bit ricey, but I cant really afford anything reputable right now.

if it doesn't sound like the loudest chainsaw ever, then i am assuming you still have the catalytic converters yes? if it's not too loud i guess cats->straight pipes wouldn't be so bad. if it's in a weldable state is another thing. my friend ran cheapo exhaust shop mufflers when his exhaust first fell apart before getting a header and trust catback later. just be sure to budget for mufflers if you ever get rid of the emissions stuff.

I took the Ypipe/mufflers completely off. Cats are still intact. It isn't too loud and sounds nothing like a chainsaw, pretty deep actually. You unleash the true chainsaw beast once you remove the cats.

I just got done removing the Y pipe from the cats... and It sounds pretty good. Makes my car look a bit off in the back without mufflers, but I can live with it until Payday. I appreciate all the help.

you don't want your exhaust dumping under the middle of your car for longer than is absolutely necessary.

You can get mufflers on ebay for like ten bucks.

I ran with all the cats and dual straight pipes from the cat back.(2 1/4in piping BTW) It didn't sound too bad, kinda deeper too.

haha, that sucks man... I used to own an '86 BMW 325es and the exact same thing happened. It was hilarious, lol. I heard a loud crash and then some banging noise and then nothing, lol. I pulled over to find half of my exhaust laying on the side of the road.

The noise got old though after a couple days...

i hear ya..

I bought my '88 TII in non running state for $400 when i brought her home my dad said
"u paid how much for this?"
"$400"
"400!!!?? any way u can take it back?"
"dad I bargained it down for 1,100 what more do u want? think of it as a project car"
"more like a black hole for money, and u just threw $400 down the toilet, i woulda gave no more then $250, and u did the guy a favor by taking it off his hands, i bet he's happy as pig in ****"

when he found out it was a rotary he was even MORE skeptical and cynical
at that point i gave up, and said "I'm gonna enjoy the look on ur face when i get it running and prove u wrong"

My passenger side muffler fell off while I was driving last year. haha Drove without it for a while, drove with a pipe welded onto that side for a little while longer, and then eventually got a new catback. I'm sure it's fine the way it is, just don't drive too long without a replacement...
