Yeah i have an 88 TII and the same problem, my idle is erratic and usually stays at 2k. Its been doing it since i bought the car back in november, basically its really hard to figure this out so i would be weary of this mechanic especially if he doesent know about rotaries. Last time i took my car to the mechanic and he dident know rotaries, i almost had to buy a new oil cooler cuz the dumbass couldent find it. So really the best thing my freind is get your car outa there and figure it out yourself, he could end up ******* your car up even more beleive me. Look there plenty of solutions to this problem. One major one is like the dude posted before vac problems, but there can be many other culprits. Do a search on this forum under "idle problems" and that will give you plenty of ideas on where to start.
This is a VERY common problems on TII's for this year
