my idiot loghts talk to me!

we all have heard about the clusters flicker on and off (well mine does on my 90 vert) and i have no idea where to begin to start looking to fix the problem. BUT i have noticed a few things.
1) when my lights flicker after start it means shes warmed up
2) when im driving fast and they flicker it means a cop is usually around the next corner. the last few days ive been driving the go off i slow down and theres a cop a 1/4 mile ahead of me.

its really weird....

any way mine were flickering too, i took them out and made sure all the screws were tight that held it together and that the wires were in tight, hasn't seemed to flicker since then

Previous owner wired a radar detector into the idiot lights. That's the only answer.

That is actually a really good idea.... you would never get busted for having a detector.

Probably a bad alternator... what does the volt meter say when the lights are flickering?

It should be 14.4 volts.

Anything less than 13.5 volts means the alternator is on its way out. Anything less than 12.6 volts and the alternator can't even produce enough power to keep the car running and the car is running on the battery.

That last line man...something just clicked in my head to actually hear him voice over saying that so seriously...one of the few things that have made me laugh out loud lately.

not to thread jack but the mazda racing alt pulley's..are they known to severly underpower the alternator? The waterpump and alt are the only things I have as far as pulleys ran on the motor and the previous owner left the mazda racing pulley on there and my idiot lights flicker a lot and idle is low and acts like it wants to die a lot when depressing the clutch so...are those low alt output alt signs too?
