My fuel tank is making funny noises...

When I fill up with fuel I'm not able to fill very quickly at all. If I fill it too much it sits there and gargles and spits fuel out the filler neck for several minutes. This is a 88 GTU I just purchased.
Thanks,
~Jason

some one might have modded the fueltanks over flow so it will hold more fuel but actually what happened was they made it so the fuel talk will overflow on accident

in the hatch/trunk under the carpet there is a blue wire going into a silver square take that off and you will be able to see into your gas tank... there might be somthing in it... i know kids like to mess around with gas tanks... just use a flash light but becareful not to drop it into it or youll have some trouble... good luck

This RX-7 is 100% stock and has never been tampered with as far as I'm aware. Any nore ideas? I know it was stored winters and fuel additive was used, but that wouldn't react with the fuel in any way, would it?

An additive shouldn't cause a problem like this... there's no way, unless it created some crazy fume build-up that's causing your tank to be pressurized. I'd pop the fuel pump out as previously suggested and check it out though, there might be something goofy going on in there.

Do you ever get mad hissing when you pop the filler cap off?

Some cars have a "flapper" valve in the filler tube that closes in case of a roll over. I don't know if the RX-7 has this, but the RX-8 does. So it could be a flapper valve that is stuck partially closed.

If this happens at only one gas station or only intermittently, it could be caused by faulty shut-off sensors in the gas pump nozzles. Had that happen before.

Do different pumps or stations all do this?

The "check and cut" valve may be bad. This allows vapours from the fuel tank to be directed through the charcoal canister during fueling.
