Lets say you have $15,000...

Quality FD - $13,000
Money Spent fixing small problems - $2000

Theres all your money, or close to it. And you have a high 13 sencond car.

Quality FC - $5000
Repairs - $1000
Rebuilt / Ported Engine - $3000
Intake, Exhaust, Fuel Mods, Turbo Upgrade, Fuel Computer, etc...

That will probably run you less than $15,000 and you will have an 11 second car.

Just a thought

If you have to ask if you can afford it you might want to stay away from it. You can make an FC handle as good as an FD but the biggest part of that equation is the driver. A good driver in an FC will out do an average driver in an FD. Stick with the TII or get your N/A rebuilt going with a 4 port engine and custom intake. It can make good usable HP and you will end up without a car payment.

Thumbs up RX-7s rock!

S4 or S5 T2 FC= Sports car, suitable for daily driving.
FD=Super car not recommended for daily driving.

Your choice,
Isaac

P.S. All I care about is that you are staying rotary.

That number is very subjective and doesn't mean that much to me. sure the 3rd gen was a better handling car from the factory than the 2nd gen but most of the hardcore RX-7 fans don't leave there cars stock. I don't know what combination it would take for the average driver but you would have to start with the basics(coil springs, struts, swaybars and alignment settings) and go from there. But its still up to the driver to do the driving. As an example our local autocross has a couple of 3rd gens that show up fairly regular. They have big turbos and big tires and big tail pipes but I seem to run a second or two faster than them every event. Now I'm not saying I'm a better driver but I must be doing something right. And no, I'm not running some hybrid TII or a per. port engine. I'm driving an 87 Civic Si that is totally stock except for the 14" rims with 6 year old Firestone tires. I'm simply out driving them since I can use my car to its fullest. There cars are just to much for them to use autocrossing. They may be able to run a 12 second 1/4 mile but who cares on the autocross course. Are you confused yet. I don't have an exact answer and if I did I could probably sell it. PM me if you want to and I'll tell you what I'm running on my FP car. Its really basic stuff but the alignment is the key.

i typed a whole bunch of stuff but it got erased here is the short version. FC is incredibly fun. FD outhandles it hands down and out powers it. it all comes down to how much you can afford in maintenance and MODS! i've invested almost 2years and $30k into my FD and its still not done..... my TII has about $5000 invested into it and its almost done. i suggest you try and drive both before you decide you can make both cars reliable very easily although a FD can be reliable with about 320rwhp with barely any mods i would say a TII maxes out reliability at about 250rwhp

WOW. $30k and not done? DAMN. FC it is then!! But I am sad to tell all my N/A homies.......I am goin TII. But I will probally get another N/A as a daily driver next summer. Thanks for all the AWESOME input ya'll!! I have made up my mind. Yeah, it is cool to say you have an FD, but I think all things considered, an TII is just my ticket!!! Now, to finalize that loan paperwork and find someone to drive me halfway across the country to get a TII..

I have both of them, and I will say that either way, they're a bad *** car. I would go with the FC though, just because then the car payment would be less which means more mods.

Ya I still say go with the FC. It seems kind of like modding an FC is helping it, while modding an FD is hurting it. I dunno, just I wouldn't really want to mod a brand new car. Would much rather mod an older car. Thats just me I guess. Either way you'll have a tight ryde.

alright i own an 89 t2 FC , my best friend owns a 3rd gen 93 R2?
so far the whole time we've been moddin both cars it seems to be like this
3rd gen PROS: looks nice, factory handling is great!!, pretty fast stock, you wanna get the looks this is the car for you. looks good. Non-seq. stock turbos really plant you in your seat. Motor can make hella power. Everyone knows what a 3rd gen looks like. Did i say looks yet?

3rd gen CONS: expensive to maintain you can easily i MEAN EASILY drop 5k on this thing. Vaccum hoses MY GOD VACCUM HOSES... its a ******* rats nest, interior is really cramped. Stays hot for hours after you turn it off.
Small engine compartment.

2nd gen PROS: Cheap, spacious interior, looks prety nice for being 12+ years old, Motor can make serious power, Most people dont know what your car is or looks like they just think its slow . Some mods are cheaper than 3rd gens.. NOT ALL OF THEM, single turbo
big engine compartment. did i mention spacious interior?

2nd gen CONS: Under 3k talk about bog city... lil squared off. ALOT of electircal problems. DAMN cold solders.. idle problems will haunt you.... Its MAF... any holes on the intake system after that MAF sensor will lead to problems.... Doesnt looks as good and 3rd gen. Noone knows what your car is ( con and pro )

i think that does it from my part. hehe

If you can afford it, get the FD definatlely. Besides certain Ferraris and Lamborghinis, it is the nicest looking car out there IMO. I mean, its just beautiful But I can assure you that if you have to have a loan to get one, you cant afford it. (Neither can I right now ) I was thinking the same way as you a few months ago. I was gonna get a loan, buy a FD, and be happy I have one. But what happens if something breaks, or you.....want to mod it? You wont be able to. So Ive descided to wait two years till I get outta College, the once I get a good job go buy myself a FD, and Mod the hell out of it I cant wait! I say just wait, drive the N/A till your outta school or get a good paying job or whatever, then buy whatever you want. I was making $8.63/hr, working full time (40 hrs/week) before I went to school, and trust me that was nowhere near enough money to afford a FD.

I had my choice, I drove a Silver Touring with 64k Miles on it and my 89 TII with 75k Miles on it in the same week. I bought the TII. FD's are trash as far as interior, ever worried about your door panel breaking just because you used the handle on it to shut the door in an FC? Anything ever peeled off your FC Interior? Next is relability, of you buy and FD with 60k or so miles on it is probably going to need a motor and turbos in the next 10k miles even if you leave it totally stock (esp if its a 93.) Along with the $3000 worth of motors and turbos (and thats not installed) you are gonna need ~ $500 worth of new motor mounts, ect ect ect. If the motor has already been replaced, who did it? Most dealers couldn't even get an FC back running properly no less a complicated *** FD. You are probably gonna end up with boost problems and vaccume leaks. Second Speed-Density that you cant program is TRASH. It cheaper to make and lighter. Any change in VE and the car will go lean, MAS cars take better to mods. Personally I will NEVER own an FD, but thats my opionion, it is a fast awesome looking awesome handling car, but that will never outdo the fact it is so poorly built inside.

Another plus of the FD is the huge aftermarket for them. Theres alot of stuff for the FC also, but even more for the FD. I love the fact that you can just call up M2Performance, spend like $3k for there stage 3 package, and just bolt it all up when it gets to your house. Bam, 315 RWHP, low-mid 12's, and still great reliability (for a FD ) But again, it all comes down to what you can afford. Stuff's still gonna break. But for me anyway, itll be worth it.

<-------Loves FD's soooooooo much

I believe I will get one in about 7+ years or so...after I'm out of college, I'll be 25 so insurance wouldn't be that bad, and the prices will have drastically drop due to deprication and the production of the RX-8

i think the earlier you get a FD the better if you guys plan on waiting 5-6 years they are gonna be VERY hard to come by read $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ . this could prove good for me. FD's are rising in value every year

FC or FD

I've both, and love them both, but if I want to be exhilarated, I take the FD out.

And I am making just a little more power with my FC.

The FD is a complete package that would be hard to match with a Porsche/Ferrari, much less an FC.

If you really enjoy your driving, one drive of an FD would convince you.

I dunno...I've owned a

1) 94 Touring (BPU), lowered (not my doing...last owner)...it was fast as hell and had handling to match.....then I sold it (oil seals going...in engine and turbo)

2) 93 Touring. The works. Haltech, TD-06 (and related support components...O.S. Gigken clutch, light flywheel fuel stuff...) , exhaust, lowered-- streetport...the f*cker even had graphite/CF wheels...custom made by BBS for Bugatti (supposedly 1k/wheel...but they dont seem to exist). Fast. Way, way too fast. (Wrecked. Eek.)

3) 90 GXL. Blew up a week after I got it (coolant hose: overheat, 2 days ebfore it was going to shop for a check-up). But still....entirely too much money and time for an N/A later....the most fun of the three cars. I can drive it as hard as I want, everyday, and not worry about anything (included, but not limited to: killing myself with the power excess, and overcofidence in the cars ability to compensate for my amatuer-racer driving skills....)

Stay FC. Stay N/A.
