My Fan Is SOOO Loud!

I took my car to my mechanic and he did something that he said would help cool my car, something about a pin, but now the fan is engaged like THE WHOLE TIME! It blows so much air it sounds like a super hair dryer. My mechanic is out of town for the week, what can I do to fix this?

first find a different mechanic... if he doenst know that a fan should not run all the time he does not know much about cars.... i wouldnt be surprised if your fan blades fail driving like that for a week because those fans are not made to spin at 7-9k rpms constantly and the velocity of the air is so great the fan does nothing but restrict air from cooling the engine at high speeds... all i can say is maybe consider doing the electric fan swap unless he still has that part and you want to wait a week, otherwise buy a new fan clutch but those are higher $$ than the electric

Is a bad fan clutch the reason the fan would blow hard like that all the time? My car just started to do that. It sounds really loud at idle and when I pop the hood, feels like it's blowing tons of air.

it should blow hard for a few secs when you start the car and kick out of it as the clutch starts to warm up.. then you should be able to grab the fan slowly while spinning and stop it.. you and stop it and throw it back the other way see if it goes and then it pick up again.. basically if u can stop it with your hand then its working (when warm) if not you need a new clutch fan

sounds like there is no one here that I want to have work on my car, Yes the fan will pull hard on start up and then spin down once the oil side in side slings around, and one could grap it but "be careful" then once the air comming through the radeator heats and pasesthe heat on to the clutch of the fan it will start to lock up depending on how hot the air , so like on thoes 100deg days the air passen over it all will couse the the fan to pull much HARDER then try to grab it and see how many fingers you lose. It has a thermale thing in side that acts like a brake on a disc. just find one and take it a part

PLEASE don't stick your fingers into a moving fan. If it's not working properly, your fingers, or what's left of them, will be all over the driveway.

From the sounds of it, the emchanic pinned the fan, meaning he pinned through the clutch. Basically, the fan is now directly mounted to the engine.
If you stuck your fingers in there, it is going to hurt like hell at the very least, as it will NOT slow down.

I was just thinking that... especially if his mechanic locked the clutch up

Were you having cooling problems to start with? If not I would never trust my car to him again. Who knows what part of your car he'll try to "improve" next time.

Actually, if you weren't having cooling problems you should go back one more time and demand he reimburse you for the cost of replacing the perfectly good thermoclutch he ruined. Find out what Mazda charges for them.

I did have some coolant problems but from a leak, he said it would help me cool, I might go with an e-fan if this one is messed up. There are e-fans that can blow the same or more than the stock fan right? Can anone point me to a write-up or an FAQ?

Maybe not so dangerous, but temporary for sure.

Here is the whole story:
The fan clutch uses a silicon oil viscous fluid in two chambers inside.
The Bi-metal strip on the front bends outward as it warms and opens the valve from the reservoir side to the clutch side.
Centripetal force provides the pumping action to move the fluid.
After 100,000 miles the bearing seals wear, and the bearing lube weakens the clutch fluid's grip.
Both the S4 & S5 clutch freewheel when cold.
The s4 clutch increases it's bite gradually with temperature rise.
The s5 clutch is more on-off. (It just coasts until is gets warm)
Once they are warm, the fan speed goes up with engine speed to about 4000 RPM.
As the engine revs higher the fan stays at ~4K.
If your warmed up fan only revs up to ~2500 RPM, it's bad.

Bending the bi-metal strip on the front outwards or removing the pin just sets the clutch for "hot".
Just go easy until you can replace the fan clutch or switch to an e-fan.

Stupid me - got "white line fever"

O well, the compression was already low when I got the car.

Back to the fan - max RPM will tell if it's worn out.

If fan revs go up with engine revs to ~4K it's good, but without a bi-metal & pin it won't freewheel when cold..
